Generate Dothraki names that sound like they belong on the Dothraki Sea: hard, o-ending warrior names like Drogo and Rakharo, softer i-ending names for women like Irri and Jhiqui, plus khals, bloodriders, and epithets for Game of Thrones fan fiction, roleplay, and D&D characters.
About dothraki names
Dothraki names follow a pattern that is easy to hear once you know it. Men's names in A Song of Ice and Fire almost always end in -o: Drogo, Jhaqo, Pono, Mago, Qotho, Haggo, Cohollo, Rakharo, Aggo, Jhogo. Women's names lean toward -i, as in Irri and Jhiqui. Both draw on the consonant set David J. Peterson later codified for the spoken language on the HBO show: kh, q, zh, jh, rh, th, sh and doubled letters like the gg in Aggo or the rr in Kovarro, with only the vowels a, e, i and o. That is why Dothraki names feel harsh and clipped next to the Valyrian ae and y of the Targaryens.
Titles matter more than surnames. A khal leads a khalasar, his kos are his lieutenants, his bloodriders swear their lives to him, and his wife is the khaleesi. Nobody carries a family name; a man is Drogo son of Bharbo, or simply Drogo, and a nickname like Loso the Lame can stick for life. The names here mix the canon khals and riders with original names built from the same sounds, plus a handful with titles, patronymics and epithets so you can name a whole khalasar for fan fiction, a GoT roleplay, or a nomadic horse culture in your own fantasy world.
Tips for choosing a name
- Keep men's names ending in -o and women's in -i or -a. It is the quickest way to make an original name read as Dothraki rather than generic fantasy.
- Lean on the language's signature sounds: kh, q, zh, jh, rh and doubled consonants. Avoid the letter u and soft English-style endings like -ia or -ius.
- Use titles instead of surnames. Khal for a leader, Ko for his captains, Khaleesi for his wife; everyone else goes by a single name or 'X son of Y'.
- Give a rider an earned epithet rather than a house name, the way the books give Loso the Lame. Tie it to a deed, a wound, a horse, or a place like Vaes Dothrak.
- For a whole khalasar, vary syllable counts. Mix short names like Aggo and Pono with longer ones like Rakharo and Cohollo so the crowd does not sound like one person.
Frequently asked questions
How are Dothraki names formed in Game of Thrones?
Male names end in -o (Drogo, Jhaqo, Rakharo) and female names tend to end in -i (Irri, Jhiqui). They use the Dothraki sound set of kh, q, zh, jh, rh, th and doubled consonants, with the vowels a, e, i and o, and no family names, only titles and patronymics.
What is the difference between a khal, a ko, and a bloodrider?
A khal is the warlord who leads a khalasar. His kos are his senior captains who may become khals themselves when he dies. Bloodriders are the three men sworn to him as brothers who are expected to die when he does. His wife is the khaleesi.
Do Dothraki have surnames?
No. A Dothraki is known by a single name, a title, or a patronymic such as Drogo son of Bharbo. Nicknames and epithets like Loso the Lame are common. Only the dosh khaleen, the widowed crones of Vaes Dothrak, hold a collective name.
Can I use these names for characters outside Game of Thrones?
Yes. The canon names belong to George R. R. Martin's world, but the original names here work for any nomadic horse-riding culture in a novel, D&D campaign, or game, especially if you want something harsher than Mongol- or Scythian-inspired names.
