Military Operation Name Generator

Military operation names have gone through three distinct eras, and each one gives you a different flavour to borrow. In the Second World War the British and Americans used single-word codenames deliberately chosen to reveal nothing: Overlord, Neptune, Torch, Husky, Dynamo, Mincemeat, Chastise. Churchill insisted that no mother should have to say her son died in Operation Bunnyhug, so the words were dignified but opaque. The Germans favoured historical and mythic names (Barbarossa, Valkyrie, Sea Lion), the Soviets named offensives after generals (Bagration).

During the Cold War the US Army adopted a computer-generated system that paired two random words, which is why Vietnam gave us Cedar Falls, Junction City, Rolling Thunder and Arc Light. From the 1989 invasion of Panama onward, the Pentagon shifted to public-relations names that state the mission's moral purpose: Just Cause, Desert Storm, Restore Hope, Enduring Freedom, Inherent Resolve. British operations, by contrast, still get bland randomly assigned words such as Granby, Telic and Herrick, and France favours regional or animal names like Serval and Barkhane.
