Generate triceratops names for a plushie, a tamed trike in a survival or park-building game, a story character or a classroom mascot. The list mixes horn and frill names like Three-Horn Theo and Frill Collins, shield names like Bulwark, gentle plant-eater names like Clover and titles like Lady Hornsby.

About triceratops names

Triceratops means "three-horned face", built from the Greek tri (three), keras (horn) and ops (face), and nearly every good trike name leans on one of those parts. Horn names are the obvious start: Prong, Greathorn, Three-Horn Theo. The bony neck frill gives Frill Collins, Ruffle and Lady Frillsworth, and the parrot-like beak gives Beaky and Greenbeak. The number three does the rest, with Trident, Hat Trick, Trefoil and Triple Scoop.

The animal's build suggests a second family of names. A triceratops was a heavy, low-slung plant-eater with a head shaped like a shield, so wall and shield words suit it (Bulwark, Rampart, Shieldwall), as do ox and bull nods such as Ferdinand and Blue Ox. Its diet points the other way, toward gentle names from ferns, leaves and flowers: Clover, Fiddlehead, Bracken, Late Bloomer. Plushies and classroom mascots get soft names like Snugglefrill and Topsy Wopsy, or dignified ones like Duchess Threehorn.

A small share of the list is labelled in parentheses: nicknames of well-known fossil skeletons such as Hatcher and Big John, fictional trikes such as Cera from The Land Before Time, and real horned-dinosaur genera such as Torosaurus. Everything else is a pet-style name, and the styles are mixed through the list, so most batches show several of them.

How to choose triceratops names

  • Pick the feature you like best and name from it: horns give Prong or Proudhorn, the frill gives Ruffle or Frillbert, and the beak gives Beaky or Stoutbeak.
  • For a toddler's plushie, choose something short and easy to say, such as Topsy, Tot, Clover or Pokey. Long titles like Sir Charge-a-Lot are more fun for older children.
  • A tamed trike in a game usually has a job, so name it for the job: Berry Wagon or Pack Mule for a gatherer, Bulwark or Gatekeeper for a base guard.
  • Naming more than one? Lean on the three theme: Athos, Porthos and Aramis for a trio, or Tertius and Tertia for a matched pair.
  • For a story character, add a trait to a plain name the way the list does with Clover the Kind and Prong the Patient. The epithet does half the characterization for you.

Frequently asked questions

What does the name Triceratops mean?

It means "three-horned face" in Greek: tri for three, keras for horn and ops for face. That is why so many names on this list play on three, horns or faces, from Trident and Trio to Keras and Hornface.

What are some famous triceratops names?

Well-known fossil skeletons often carry nicknames, and the list includes Hatcher, Big John and Horridus, each labelled as a fossil. In fiction, Cera is the young three-horn in The Land Before Time and Trixie is the toy triceratops in Toy Story 3. These entries are marked in parentheses so you can tell them from the pet-style names.

What is a good name for a triceratops plushie?

Soft, bouncy names suit a stuffed toy: Snugglefrill, Cuddlehorn, Topsykins, Pointy Pie and Lil Prong are all in the list. A plain leaf or flower name such as Clover or Fernie works well too, since the real animal was a plant-eater.

Can I use these names for a tamed trike in a game?

Yes. Games such as ARK and Jurassic World Evolution let you rename your dinosaurs, and short names like Bulwark, Plow or Packhorn fit most name fields. This site is not affiliated with any game, film or toy maker.
