Find the right rhino name for a plush toy, a zoo or reserve adoption, a story character, a mascot or a game companion: tough tank-and-boulder names, Swahili, Zulu, Hindi and Indonesian names from rhino country, ironically dainty names, horn puns, and the names of famous real and fictional rhinos.

About rhino names

Real rhinos get named by the people who protect them, and that shapes what a rhino name sounds like. Rangers and keepers in South Africa, Kenya and Namibia lean on Zulu, Swahili and Sotho words: Thandi (loved), Zuri (beautiful), Bhejane (the Zulu word for black rhino), Kifaru (Swahili for rhino), or the reserve a calf came from, like Lewa, Hluhluwe or Ol Pejeta. Greater one-horned rhinos in India and Nepal carry Hindi and Nepali names and honorifics (Raja, Rani, Bhima, Ganga), and the handful of Sumatran rhinos in breeding programmes have Indonesian names such as Harapan, meaning hope, Ratu (queen) and Andatu.

The other register is pure personality. Rhinos are two-tonne tanks with surprisingly soft temperaments, so both ends of the spectrum work: Boulder, Dozer, Panzer and Juggernaut for the armor and bulk, and deliberately dainty names like Petunia, Buttercup, Pebble and Tiny for the same animal. Old-fashioned human names (Bertha, Walter, Gertrude, Reginald) suit the wrinkled, grumpy-grandparent look, while horn puns and rhino wordplay (Hornsby, Rhinestone, Sir Rhinalot) fit mascots and kids' stories.

The list also carries the famous ones: Sudan, Najin and Fatu, the last northern whites; Clara, who toured Europe in the 1700s; and fictional heavyweights like Rocksteady and McHorn.

How to choose rhino names

  • Match the name to the species if it matters to you: Swahili and Zulu names fit African black and white rhinos, Hindi and Nepali names suit greater one-horned rhinos, and Indonesian names fit Sumatran and Javan rhinos.
  • Contrast is funny and memorable on a rhino: a two-tonne bull called Petunia or a calf called Juggernaut both land better than a literal name.
  • For a plush or a child's toy, pick something a toddler can say: two syllables with strong consonants, like Bruno, Tank, Rocky, Mochi or Rosie.
  • If you are naming a symbolic adoption through a sanctuary, check whether the rhino already has a ranger-given name; many programmes let you name a calf but not a known adult.
  • For a mascot or sports team rhino, lean on armor and momentum words (Rampart, Charger, Steamroller) rather than cute ones, and keep it to one or two words for a jersey.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a rhino?

Strong, blunt names like Tank, Boulder, Bruno and Dozer are the classic choice; ironic cute names like Petunia or Pebble are a close second. Swahili, Zulu and Hindi names such as Zuri, Thandi, Bhejane and Raja reflect where rhinos actually live.

What are some famous rhino names?

Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, and his daughter and granddaughter Najin and Fatu; Clara, the rhinoceros who toured Europe in the 1740s; Harapan and Andatu from the Sumatran rhino breeding programme; and fictional rhinos like Rocksteady from TMNT and Officer McHorn from Zootopia.

What is rhino in Swahili or Zulu?

Kifaru is Swahili for rhinoceros, and Faru is a shorter form. In Zulu, Bhejane (or uBhejane) is the black rhino and Umkhombe the white rhino. Pembe means horn in Swahili. All of these work well as names on their own.

Can I use these names for a baby rhino or a plush toy?

Yes. The list mixes calf-sized names (Nugget, Pudge, Biscuit, Mochi), dignified adult names (Winston, Bertha, Magnus) and ranger-style African and Asian names, so you can pick by age, personality or species.
