AQHA registered names have a look all their own. Breeders traditionally reference the sire, dam or a famous ancestor, which is why so many Quarter Horses carry fragments like Peppy, Doc, Cat, Boon, Chex, Whiz, Dun It, Cash and Dash. A colt by a Metallic Cat son out of a Peptoboonsmal mare might become "Metallic Boon Cat"; a barrel prospect tracing to Dash Ta Fame might be "Famous Amos Dash". Reading a Quarter Horse's name is often reading its pedigree.

The association's rules shape the style too. Names are limited to 20 characters including spaces, cannot duplicate a name already in use, and traditionally avoid punctuation, so apostrophes and hyphens are dropped: Docs Hickory, not Doc's Hickory. That is also why creative spellings like Nite, Chic, Whiz, Ruf and Suen are everywhere; they save characters and dodge duplicates. Discipline slang shows up constantly, from cutting and reining (Smart, Chic, Spook, Gunner) to racing (Streakin, Runnin, Jess) and ranch work (Roan, Rooster, Cowboy).
