Real dinosaur names are built like Lego bricks from Greek and Latin roots. The genus usually describes a body part, a behavior, or a place: Triceratops is "three-horned face," Velociraptor is "swift thief," Pachycephalosaurus is "thick-headed lizard," and Utahraptor and Albertosaurus tell you where the bones were found. Stack a descriptive root on one of those suffixes and you have a name a paleontologist would nod at.

Invented species names in fiction and games follow exactly the same rules, which is why Ignisaurus (fire lizard), Glacioraptor (ice thief), or Coronaceratops (crown horned face) sound plausible next to real genera. Pet and character dinosaurs, on the other hand, get names the way dogs do: Rexy and Blue from Jurassic World, Littlefoot and Cera from The Land Before Time, Arlo from The Good Dinosaur, or plain descriptive nicknames like Spike, Chomper, and Stompy.
