About dino names
A dino name is the personal name you give an individual dinosaur, as opposed to its species name like Triceratops or Velociraptor. In practice these come from four traditions. First, the fossils themselves: museums nickname their most famous skeletons, so we have Sue and Stan (T. rex), Dippy (Diplodocus), Sophie (Stegosaurus), Big Al (Allosaurus), and Scotty. Second, film and TV: Rexy, Blue, Delta, Echo, and Charlie from Jurassic Park and Jurassic World; Littlefoot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike from The Land Before Time; Arlo and Spot from The Good Dinosaur; Buddy, Tiny, Shiny, and Don from Dinosaur Train.
Third is the playful pet-name style most kids and parents want: clip the species into a nickname (Steggy, Bronto, Anky, Pterry, Trike), or describe what the dinosaur does (Chomper, Stompy, Roary, Nibbles). Fourth is the deliberately mismatched human name, which is funny precisely because a nine-ton predator called Gerald or Mabel is absurd. Punny titles like Sir Chomps-a-Lot or Dinah Saur belong here too.
A good dino name should be easy for a child to shout, hint at what the animal looks like or does, and fit the tone of the project, whether that is a bedtime plush, an ARK: Survival Evolved tame, or a picture-book hero. This generator mixes all four styles so you can browse quickly.
Tips for choosing a name
- Start from the species: a horned Triceratops becomes Trike, Topsy, or Horny; a Stegosaurus becomes Steggy or Plates; a long-neck sauropod becomes Stretch or Lofty.
- For a plush or toddler's toy, pick a two-syllable name with a soft ending (Rexy, Roary, Bronty, Chompers); they are easier for young kids to say and remember.
- For a scary or dramatic dinosaur in a story or game, use a museum-style single name (Sue, Stan, Scotty) or a heavy word like Titan or Behemoth instead of a cutesy one.
- Naming a whole herd or raptor pack? Copy Jurassic World and use a matching set: NATO letters (Alpha, Blue, Charlie, Delta, Echo), gemstones, or US states where fossils are found (Montana, Utah, Dakota, Alberta).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a dino name and a dinosaur name?
Here 'dino names' means personal names for an individual dinosaur, like Rexy or Chomper. If you want species names such as Tyrannosaurus or Spinosaurus, use our Dinosaur Name Generator instead.
What are the raptor names in Jurassic World?
Owen Grady's raptor squad is Blue, Charlie, Delta, and Echo. The T. rex is nicknamed Rexy (officially Roberta), and Camp Cretaceous adds Bumpy the Ankylosaurus and Big Eatie and Little Eatie the T. rexes.
What are famous real dinosaur fossils called?
Sue at the Field Museum and Stan are the best-known T. rex skeletons; Dippy is the Natural History Museum's Diplodocus, Sophie its Stegosaurus, and Big Al is a famous Allosaurus. Scotty (Canada) and Trix (Netherlands) are other well-known T. rexes.
Can I use these names for a game character or a product?
Individual names are free to use, including commercially. Avoid presenting a character as an existing franchise dinosaur (for example, marketing a toy as Jurassic World's Blue) since that would involve trademarks.
