About t names

Tyrannosaurus rex means "tyrant lizard king", and most good T-Rex names lean into one of those three words. Tyrant names are the fierce ones: Ravager, Bonecrusher, Goreking, or Latin and Greek titles such as Imperator, Dynastes and Rex Regum. King names play with royalty, from Sir Stomps-a-Lot and Lady Chompsworth to plain King Rex. And because the real animal had bus-sized bulk and famously short arms, there is a long tradition of affectionate, slightly mocking names too: Rexy, Chomper, Nibbles, Tiny Arms, Meatball.

Real specimens set the other pattern. Museums nickname their skeletons, usually after the finder or the dig site, which is how the world got Sue at the Field Museum, Stan, Scotty, Trix, Bucky, Jane and Wyrex. Hell Creek, Montana, Dakota and Alberta make good names for the same reason, since that is where most T-Rex fossils come from. Fiction adds Rexy (Jurassic Park), Sharptooth (The Land Before Time) and Speckles (Tarbosaurus, but close enough).

Use this generator for a stuffed toy, a tame in Ark or Path of Titans, a Jurassic World Evolution exhibit, a children's book character or a nickname for the skeleton in your local museum.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the role: a tamed Ark rex that carries you into boss fights earns Juggernaut or Tempest; a plush on a toddler's bed wants Rexy, Biscuit or Chompy.
  • Irony lands well with a T-Rex. Tiny, Nibbles or Cupcake on a seven-ton predator is funnier and more memorable than another Destroyer.
  • For a story or game character, give the rex a scar or habit and name it from that (Scarjaw, Old Thunder, Loudmouth) so the name does characterization for you.
  • Puns on Rex work best when they are short and say-able: Tyrannosaurus Wrecks, Rex Luthor and T-Bone read instantly; anything needing explanation will not.
  • If you want museum realism, borrow the real convention and name the animal after where it was found or who found it, like Sue, Scotty or Hell Creek.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous T-Rex names?

The best-known real fossils are Sue (Field Museum, Chicago), Stan, Scotty (the largest known), Trix, Bucky, Jane, Wyrex, Tristan Otto and Samson. In fiction, the Jurassic Park rex is nicknamed Rexy (Roberta in the novel's fandom), and The Land Before Time's villain is Sharptooth.

What is a good name for a female T-Rex?

Several of the most famous specimens, including Sue and Jane, carry female names, and the Jurassic Park rex is female, so almost anything works. Popular choices here include Rexanne, Regina, Tyra, Big Mama, Lady Chompsworth, Roxie and Tyrannica.

Can I use these names for a T-Rex in Ark or Jurassic World Evolution?

Yes. Both games let you rename tamed or bred dinosaurs, and the list covers every register you might want: intimidating names for a combat rex, cute ones for a pet, and punny ones for a breeding line. Names under about 20 characters fit most in-game name fields.

Why do so many T-Rex names end in Rex?

Rex is Latin for king and is the species name in Tyrannosaurus rex, so it has become shorthand for the animal. Names like Rexy, Rexford, T-Rexx and Rex Luthor all trade on that recognition, which is why they read as T-Rex names even out of context.
