Train Station Name Generator

Train station names are almost never invented from scratch. Railways name their stations after the town, village, street, estate, or landmark they serve, so a believable fictional station is really a believable place name with a railway suffix attached. In Britain the suffixes tell you a station's role: Junction (Clapham Junction, Yeovil Junction) means lines meet there, Halt means a tiny unstaffed platform, Road means the station is inconveniently far from the village it is named after, and Central or Town distinguishes a station from a rival company's station in the same place. Big-city termini often take the name of a street or district (Paddington, Euston, Liverpool Street) rather than the city itself.

America followed a different pattern. Depot was the standard word for a small-town station, Union Station meant several railroads shared one building, and grand terminals were named for the railroad that built them (Penn Station, Michigan Central) or the street they stood on (30th Street Station, LaSalle Street). Continental Europe names by direction and function: Hauptbahnhof is the main station, Nordbahnhof faces north, Gare de Lyon is where trains to Lyon depart. Compound names like Highbury & Islington or Harrow & Wealdstone happen when a station sits between two communities and the railway did not want to offend either.
