Port Name Generator

A port is the working waterfront itself: the harbour, quays, docks, wharves, and anchorage where ships load and shelter. Real ports are named plainly. Some carry the name of a founder or patron (Port Royal, Port Said, Port Elizabeth). Many are named for whatever was landed there or made nearby, which is why old harbour maps are full of Herring Wharf, Timber Quay, Salt Quay, Custom House Wharf, and Ropewalk. Others describe the water or the danger: Deepwater Anchorage, Wrecker's Cove, the Lee Shore, the Roads (an old term for a sheltered stretch of water where ships ride at anchor).

Each harbour term carries a hint about scale. An anchorage or roadstead is open water where ships wait; a cove or landing is small and probably unimproved; a wharf, quay, or dock is a built structure; a basin or mole implies serious engineering and a wealthy owner; a naval yard or dockyard implies a navy. Choosing the right word tells your reader how big and how old the port is before you describe a single crate.

Good fictional port names combine one concrete detail (a bird, a fish, a cargo, a hazard) with the right harbour term. Smuggler's Reach, Whalebone Landing, and Iron Chain Basin each suggest a story; Harbor Bay suggests nothing.
