Generate train names in the tradition of the great named expresses (Flying Scotsman, Orient Express, Super Chief), named steam locomotives, and friendly engine characters. For model railroaders, children's authors, and anyone building a fictional railway.

About train names

Trains get named in three different ways, and it helps to know which one you want. The most famous names belong to services, not machines: the Flying Scotsman, the Orient Express, and the Super Chief were scheduled trains between two cities, run by many different locomotives over the decades. These names promise speed or luxury (Twentieth Century Limited, Golden Arrow), announce the destination (City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight), or evoke a landscape (Empire Builder, California Zephyr, Glacier Express).

Individual locomotives were named too, especially in Britain, where the Great Western named whole classes after castles, halls, manors, and kings, and the LNER named its record-breaking streamliners after birds (Mallard, Bittern) and its chief engineer (Sir Nigel Gresley). American railroads mostly numbered their engines, so the famous ones are known by number, like Big Boy 4014 or Daylight 4449, with a handful of early exceptions like The General and Jupiter. Japan's Shinkansen services use poetic Japanese words: Nozomi (hope), Hikari (light), Hayabusa (peregrine falcon).

The third tradition is the engine as a character, from Thomas and Percy to the Little Engine That Could and the Polar Express. Those names are short, warm, and human. This list covers all three so you can name a scheduled express, a heritage locomotive, or the hero of a picture book.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether you are naming a service or an engine: services take grand two- or three-word titles (Coast Starlight), engines take a single name or a name plus number (Mallard, 4449).
  • For a fictional express, combine a destination or landscape word with Express, Limited, Flyer, or Zephyr; each suffix carries an era, with Limited feeling 1920s and Zephyr feeling 1930s streamliner.
  • British-style locomotive naming works by class theme: give every engine of a class a castle, a bird, a duke, or a regiment.
  • Children's engine characters should be one or two syllables and sound like a friendly first name.
  • Reference the real thing when possible; a name like Cannonball or Midnight Special comes with a whole folk-song history attached.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Flying Scotsman a train or a locomotive?

Both, confusingly. The Flying Scotsman is the London-to-Edinburgh express service, running since 1862, and also LNER locomotive No. 4472, built in 1923 and named after the service. Most famous train names started as services and were later given to a specific engine.

Why do American trains use numbers while British ones use names?

British railways named locomotives from the earliest days as a matter of prestige, and companies like the Great Western turned it into a system with themed classes. American railroads ran far larger fleets and standardized on numbers early, reserving names for premier passenger services.

What do Express, Limited, and Zephyr mean in a train name?

Express means a fast service with few stops. Limited originally meant limited stops and limited seating, a mark of first-class prestige. Zephyr was the Burlington Route's brand for its stainless-steel diesel streamliners of the 1930s, named after the west wind.

Can I use these train names for a model railroad or a book?

Historic service and locomotive names are widely reused in the hobby and in fiction. Character names from current franchises (Thomas, Chuggington) are trademarked and should stay in your private layout, not on products for sale.
