Neighborhood Name Generator

Neighborhood names fall into a few honest categories, and knowing them makes an invented one convincing. Historic districts are named for a landmark or original use: Beacon Hill, Back Bay, the Meatpacking District, Cannery Row, the Jewellery Quarter. Immigrant enclaves take a demonym: Chinatown, Little Italy, Koreatown, Greektown. Marketing-era acronyms compress a location into a brand: SoHo (South of Houston), Tribeca (Triangle Below Canal), LoDo, RiNo, NoDa. And modern subdivisions follow the developer formula of a nature word plus a settlement word (Willow Creek Estates, Fox Run, Stonebridge Crossing), often naming the place after whatever was cleared to build it.

Older city quarters around the world use the same logic in other languages: Le Marais (the marsh), Trastevere (across the Tiber), Prenzlauer Berg (a hill), Södermalm (south island), Jordaan (possibly from jardin, garden). Working-class and industrial districts (Fishtown, the Bottoms, the Flats, Hell's Kitchen) tend to be blunt, while wealthy ones prefer Heights, Hills, Park and Gardens.

When naming a fictional neighborhood, decide first who named it: residents, a developer or a real estate agent. Then match the era, since a subdivision from 1985 will not be called The Bowery and a Victorian slum will not be called The Preserve at Millbrook.
