Generate believable city district names for fantasy capitals, cyberpunk sprawls, and modern metropolises. Names follow real urban naming patterns: trades, landmarks, gates, hills, waterfronts, and the people who settled there.
About city district names
Real city districts are almost never named by committee. They take their names from what happened there: the trade that filled a street (Ironmonger Lane, the Tanneries, Ropewalk), the gate or bridge everyone walked through (Northgate, Bridgefoot), the church or guildhall that anchored the block, or the hill and river the buildings clung to. London's Cheapside was a market, Southwark was the "south work" fort, and Whitechapel was a chapel with pale stone walls. That is why the best invented district names sound like they were worn in over centuries.
The list above follows those patterns. You will find trade quarters (Weaver's Quarter, the Chandlery), topographic names (the Bluffs, the Narrows, Cliffside), gate and bridge names (Coppergate, Kingsbridge), saints and abbeys (Saint Corvin's Cross, Friar's Walk), and colour names that hint at building stone or old heraldry (Greyfriars, Redhill, the Ochre Quarter). A handful of futuristic entries such as Neon Ward, Sector Nine, and the Undercity are included for cyberpunk and sci-fi cities.
When you build a city, mix the types. A convincing capital might have an Old Citadel on the hill, the Salt Stairs running down to Fisherman's Reach, a Guildhall Ward where the money lives, and a Rookery where it does not. The contrast between names does as much worldbuilding as the names themselves.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give each district a name from a different source (trade, landmark, saint, terrain) so the city feels like it grew organically instead of being planned in a single style.
- Let names age: the Tanneries can be a fashionable arts quarter now, and characters can still call it by its old name.
- Use short, blunt names for poor or working districts (the Stews, the Flats) and longer, grander ones for wealthy or civic areas (Cathedral Close, the Embassy Quarter).
- Anchor at least one district name to a physical feature on your map, such as a river bend, hill, or harbour, so readers can orient themselves.
- For sci-fi cities, combine a bureaucratic label with a nickname the residents use, e.g. Sector Nine known locally as the Grid.
Frequently asked questions
How are real city districts named?
Most historic district names come from a dominant trade (Ironmonger Lane), a landmark such as a gate, bridge, church, or market (Northgate, Cathedral Close), a physical feature (Millbank, the Bluffs), or the community that settled there (Little Venice). Modern districts are more often named by developers or after nearby streets and stations.
What is the difference between a district, a quarter, a ward, and a borough?
A quarter is a traditional, often informal area defined by trade or community. A ward is an administrative or electoral division, common in medieval and British cities. A borough is a larger self-governing unit, like the five boroughs of New York. District is the neutral catch-all term, and in fiction you can use whichever suits the tone of your city.
Can I use these district names in a published novel or game?
Yes. The names are common English place-name constructions and are free to use in commercial fiction, tabletop campaigns, and video games. A few, like Southwark or Whitechapel, are real London areas, so check whether you want that association.
How many districts should a fantasy city have?
Five to eight named districts is enough for most novels and campaigns; readers rarely track more. Large capitals can list a dozen or more, but only the ones where scenes actually happen need distinctive names and personalities.
