Tigers live across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, the Russian Far East, Sumatra, and formerly Korea and China, and the best tiger names tend to come from those places. Hindi and Urdu give bagh and sher (Sher Khan literally means "tiger lord"); Sanskrit gives vyaghra; Bengali gives bagh and the forest goddess Bonbibi; Malay and Indonesian give harimau and macan; Japanese gives tora and the white tiger Byakko; Korean gives horangi; and Chinese gives hu and laohu. Russian tigers are Amur or Ussuri after their rivers, and Indian reserves have made celebrities of individual tigers — Machli of Ranthambore, Ustad, Munna, Maya, and Collarwali of Pench.

Fiction supplies the other unmistakable names: Shere Khan from The Jungle Book, Rajah from Aladdin, Richard Parker from Life of Pi, Hobbes, Tigger, Tony the Tiger, Vitaly from Madagascar 3, and Master Tigress. Sports mascots add Mike (LSU), Aubie (Auburn), and Roary. In India tigers are also associated with the goddess Durga, who rides one, so names like Durga, Ambika, and Chandi carry real weight.

Stripe and fire imagery — Ember, Blaze, Saffron, Marigold, Ink, Sumi — describes the coat, and white tigers invite Frost, Ghost, and Ivory. Because tigers are the largest cats and famously solitary, single strong names work better than cutesy ones unless the "tiger" in question is actually an orange tabby, in which case Cheeto and Marmalade are entirely correct.
