Wolf names come from a handful of deep sources. Old languages are the richest: Wolfgang, Rudolf, Randolph and Adolphus all hide the Germanic wulf; Ulric and Wulfric are Old English; Conall, Conan and Faolan are Gaelic wolf names; Zev is Hebrew, Vuk is Serbian, Volk is Russian, Lobo is Spanish and Okami is Japanese. Norse myth supplies Fenrir, the wolves Skoll and Hati who chase sun and moon, and Odin's companions Geri and Freki. Roman legend gives Lupa, Romulus and Remus; Greek myth gives Lycaon, the first werewolf.

Real wolves have names too. Yellowstone's famous wolves are usually known by number (21, 302, O-Six, also called 832F) or nicknames like Cinderella, Casanova and Limpy; sled-dog history gives Balto and Togo; Alaska's lone social wolf Romeo and Oregon's wandering wolf Journey (OR-7) both became household names. Fiction adds Akela and Raksha from The Jungle Book, White Fang and Buck, the direwolves of Game of Thrones, and Kiba, Tsume, Hige and Toboe from Wolf's Rain.

For an original wolf, place names from wolf country work beautifully and feel less generic than Shadow or Storm: Denali, Yukon, Lamar, Teton, Sitka, Taiga. Nature words like Timber, Rime, Bracken and Tamarack do the same job.
