About assassin names
An assassin's name does two jobs at once. There is the name they were born with, which they usually hide, and the name the world uses when it whispers about them. The best fictional assassins have both. Ezio Auditore is a Florentine nobleman's son; the guards on the rooftops just call him "the Assassin." Arya Stark becomes "No One." Keyser Söze is a name people are afraid to say out loud.
The historical Hashashin of Alamut, the Sicarii of Judea, and the shinobi of Iga give the archetype its roots, which is why Arabic, Persian, Japanese, and Italian Renaissance names sit so naturally on an assassin. Epithets tend to be quiet rather than loud: The Locksmith, The Pale Hand, The Widow of Marrowgate. A professional killer does not call himself Death Blade; the terrifying ones sound like tradesmen, priests, or birds. Poisons (Hemlock, Aconite, Belladonna) and specialised weapons (Stiletto, Garrote, Misericorde) also make classic single-word aliases.
The list below mixes all of these registers: guild epithets, single-word codenames, plausible birth names from several cultures, and dark-fantasy names for D&D rogues and Assassin subclass characters. Pick a public alias and a private name and let the gap between them tell the character's story.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give the character two names: a real one for backstory and an alias the world knows. The contrast between 'Ilse Varga' and 'The Grey Needle' does more work than either alone.
- Understatement is scarier than aggression. 'The Clockmaker' or 'The Confessor' unsettles more than anything with 'Death' or 'Blood' in it.
- Borrow from the culture your assassin comes from: Levantine Arabic for a Hashashin, Tuscan Italian for a Renaissance blade, Edo-period Japanese for a shinobi.
- For a D&D rogue, pick a plain, forgettable given name; the whole point of the class is that nobody remembers seeing them.
- Single-word codenames (Vesper, Marrow, Quietus) work best in modern and sci-fi settings; epithets with 'The' fit medieval and fantasy worlds.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good assassin name?
Restraint. Memorable assassin names sound calm and specific rather than edgy: The Lamplighter, Nightjar, Ilse Varga. A name that sounds like a job title or a small bird is far more chilling than one that announces violence.
Are there real historical assassin names I can draw on?
Yes. The Nizari Ismaili order (the original 'Assassins') was led by figures like Hassan-i Sabbah and Rashid ad-Din Sinan, the 'Old Man of the Mountain.' Japanese shinobi families such as Hattori and Fuma, and Renaissance Italian poisoners like the Borgias' agents, are all useful models for naming.
Can I use these assassin names for my D&D character or novel?
Absolutely. The names are free for personal and commercial use in campaigns, fiction, and games. A handful are homages to Assassin's Creed characters, so treat those as inspiration rather than lifting them into a published product.
Should a female assassin have a different style of name?
Not necessarily. Epithets like The Widow, Belladonna, or The Fishwife lean feminine, but many of the best assassin aliases (Whisper, Kestrel, The Cartographer) are deliberately genderless so nobody knows who to look for.
