Generate rogue names for D&D characters, thieves' guild NPCs and fantasy fiction: street aliases like the Magpie and Nine-Fingers, full names with a criminal edge, and famous rogues from Vax'ildan to Locke Lamora. Covers thieves, assassins, swashbucklers and con artists.

About rogue names

Rogue names work in layers. A thief or assassin usually has a birth name they'd rather you didn't know, a working name they use with the guild, and a street title whispered by the people they've robbed. Locke Lamora is 'the Thorn of Camorr'; Kaz Brekker is 'Dirtyhands'; the Grey Mouser earned his name from his color and his habits. Even D&D's most famous rogues (Vax'ildan, Artemis Entreri, Jarlaxle) are remembered as much for their reputations as their names.

Street aliases follow a few reliable patterns. Small, clever animals (Magpie, Ferret, Fox, Jackdaw) suggest a burglar; blades and lock parts (Stiletto, Needle, Latch, Tumbler) suggest a professional; and physical nicknames (Nine-Fingers, Half-Hand, Two-Knives, Smiles) suggest a life that has left marks. Definite-article titles like the Velvet Hand or the Left-Handed Bride are what the city watch calls a thief they can't catch.

For a full name, pair a short, ordinary first name with a surname that sounds faintly disreputable: Corvin Ashe, Nell Quicksilver, Jasper Quill. Then add the nickname in quotes the way guild rosters do, as in Jory 'Nine-Fingers' Blackthorn. That structure works for swashbucklers, arcane tricksters and assassins alike.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Give your rogue three names: a birth name, a working alias and a street title, and decide who in the party knows which one.
  • Nicknames should be earned in play; start with a plain name and let the table hand out 'Six-Coins' or 'Softfoot' after a memorable heist.
  • Match the alias to the specialty: animals for burglars, blades for assassins, charming surnames like Marlowe or Vane for con artists and swashbucklers.
  • Avoid announcing the job in the name; 'Shadow Deathstrike' is less believable than a thief everyone knows as Fingers.
  • For a D&D rogue, use the race's naming rules for the real name (a halfling Underhill, a tabaxi with a descriptive name) and layer the alias on top.

Frequently asked questions

How do rogue names usually work?

Most fantasy rogues carry a real name plus at least one alias. The alias tends to be a small animal, a tool of the trade or a physical trait (Magpie, Latch, Nine-Fingers), and famous rogues acquire a longer title from their reputation, like the Thorn of Camorr.

What are good names for a female rogue?

The same conventions apply: a plain first name with an edge, such as Nell Quicksilver, Inej Ghafa or Tamsin Blackwood, plus a street name like the Cat or Lightfinger. Roughly half the names here are female or unisex.

What's the difference between a rogue name and an assassin name?

Assassin names lean colder and blade-focused (Stiletto, Needle, the Quiet Man), while general rogue names include charming swashbucklers, thieves and tricksters. If your character kills for coin, weight the alias toward the darker end; if they steal or con, keep it playful.

Can I use these rogue names in my own book or game?

The original names and aliases are free to use anywhere. Famous characters such as Locke Lamora, Kaz Brekker or Vax'ildan are included as examples of the conventions and belong to their creators.
