Generate merchant guild names modeled on the Hanseatic League, the livery companies of London, Venetian trading houses, and chartered companies. Built for fantasy worldbuilding, D&D campaigns, and historical fiction where trade drives the plot.

About merchant guild names

Historical merchant guilds give us three durable naming templates. English livery companies used the formal style "The Worshipful Company of Mercers" or "of Grocers," naming the trade in old craft vocabulary (mercers sold cloth, pepperers became grocers, cordwainers made shoes). Northern European traders formed leagues of cities such as the Hansa, whose name simply meant "band" and was borrowed by any coalition of towns. Italian and Flemish commerce ran through great family houses and countinghouses: the Medici, the Fuggers, the Bardi, and later chartered companies like the Merchant Adventurers or the East India Company, named for the region they held a monopoly over.

Good fantasy merchant guild names copy those frames closely because the specificity is what sells them. "The Guild of Amber Traders" tells you the region and the commodity in five words. "House Corvassi" implies a dynasty with a ledger, rivals, and secrets. "The League of the Seven Ports" suggests a map with seven dots on it and a treaty binding them. Even the plainest structure works when the trade good is unusual: saltpetre, cochineal, alum, ambergris.

Use founder-and-partner names (Hallam, Fitch & Peregrine) for a Georgian or Victorian feel, emblem names (Guild of the Three Keys) for a medieval city with a guildhall, and chartered companies for colonial or age-of-sail settings. Every entry here fits one of those patterns so it can slot into a campaign map or manuscript without explanation.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Name the commodity, not the abstraction. "Guild of Salt Merchants" builds a world; "Prosperity Alliance" builds nothing.
  • Give large guilds a short nickname the street uses (the Mercers, the Hansa, the Corvassi) and keep the formal name for charters and signage.
  • Match structure to era: Worshipful Company for medieval cities, Merchant Venturers or a chartered Company for age of sail, and a partnership like Osgood & Thistle for the 1700s onward.
  • Tie the guild to a real place on your map (Merchants of the Staple at Calmar) so its rivals and trade routes are obvious to players.
  • For villainous guilds, use cartel, monopoly, or syndicate; those words carried menace even in the Middle Ages.

Frequently asked questions

How were medieval merchant guilds actually named?

Most were named for their trade using formal titles: the Worshipful Company of Mercers, the Guild of Merchant Taylors, the Vintners' Company. City leagues took collective names like the Hansa, and family firms simply carried the family name, such as the Fugger or Medici banks.

What is the difference between a merchant guild and a craft guild?

Merchant guilds controlled buying and selling in a town and often ran its government; craft guilds regulated a single trade like weaving or smithing. In fiction, merchant guilds make better political powers, while craft guilds make better neighborhoods.

Can I use these merchant guild names in my D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. Names referencing real historical companies are provided for flavor and are historic institutions; the invented houses, leagues, and companies are free to use in games, fiction, and worldbuilding.

How do I make a merchant guild sound powerful or sinister?

Words like Consortium, Cartel, Monopoly, and Syndicate imply control, and dynastic names (House Valdemere, the Copper Kings of Kessdon) imply old money and long grudges. Combine them with a specific chokehold commodity such as salt, alum, or grain.
