Generate super mutant names in the Fallout style: canon mutants like Marcus, Fawkes, Strong and Lily, blunt one-word handles like Slab, Sledge and Meathook, worn-down pre-War names, nightkin and Institute lab designations, and Behemoth titles for roleplay, fan fiction and tabletop campaigns.

About super mutant names

Super mutant names in Fallout depend on which vat the mutant came out of. The Master's army at Mariposa and the Jacobstown nightkin kept the ordinary human names they had before the FEV, which is why the series' most memorable mutants are called Marcus, Harry, Tabitha, Keene, Davison and Lily Bowen, names that sound like a 1950s bowling league. The Lieutenant is a title, and Lou Tenant is the joke a dim mutant makes of it.

The East Coast strain from Vault 87 and the Institute is different. Those mutants lost most of their memory and intelligence, so they go by single blunt words that describe what they do or what they look like: Strong, Hammer, Fist, Brute, Swan, Grahm. Fan-made names in that register should be one or two syllables, physical and a little stupid: Slab, Sledge, Meathook, Cinderblock, Gutpunch. A few keep scraps of the old life and become Big Earl or Uncle Leo, and Institute escapees may still answer to a lab designation like Subject Forty-Four.

Nightkin, the Stealth Boy addicts, suit quieter names like Shimmer or Hush, and the mindless Behemoths are known by where they are found rather than by a name. Pick the strain first and the name style follows.

How to choose super mutant names

  • For a West Coast or nightkin mutant, use a plain mid-century first name (Merle, Gertrude, Clovis); the contrast between a gentle name and a nine-foot green giant is the whole point of Lily Bowen.
  • For an East Coast mutant, keep it to one blunt word a child could shout across a ruin: Fist, Slab, Sledge. If it takes two words, make the second one a tool or a body part.
  • Mutants who remember a little of their old life can keep a fragment, so Big Otis, Uncle Leo and Earl No-Neck all read as canon-plausible, but avoid full modern first-and-last names.
  • Give an Institute or Vault 87 escapee a lab designation (Subject Twelve, Batch Nine) and let the character choose a real name later in the story for an easy arc.
  • Do not name a Behemoth; call it by where it lurks (Bridge Behemoth, the Thing in the Tower) the way wastelanders actually would.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of super mutants in the Fallout games?

Canon super mutants include Marcus, Harry, Lou Tenant, Melchior and the Lieutenant from Fallout 1 and 2, Fawkes and Uncle Leo from Fallout 3, Tabitha, Keene, Davison, Neil, Lily Bowen, Dog and God from New Vegas, Strong, Virgil, Swan, Hammer, Fist, Brute and Erickson from Fallout 4, Grahm from Fallout 76 and Gammorin from Fallout Tactics. Frank Horrigan and Attis are FEV-enhanced but usually counted too.

Why do some super mutants have normal human names?

The Master's Mariposa strain and the nightkin kept their intelligence and their pre-War identities, so they still use names like Marcus and Tabitha. The Vault 87 and Institute strains lose most of their memory, which is why they end up with single words like Strong or Hammer. Pick the name style that matches your mutant's origin.

What is a good name for a female super mutant?

The games treat mutants as effectively sexless after the FEV, but Lily Bowen and Tabitha show the pattern: an ordinary pre-War woman's name that survived the change. Bertha, Mildred, Opal, Velma, Big Ruthie or Meat Hook Mary all fit, depending on how much of the old person is left.

Can I use these names for a D&D half-orc or another game?

Yes. The blunt one-word handles (Slab, Crusher, Bricktop) work for any brutish character, ogres and orcs included, and the lab designations suit any sci-fi experiment-gone-wrong. The canon Fallout names are best kept to Fallout roleplay and fan fiction so your character does not collide with an established one.
