Ghoul Name Generator

The ghoul began as the ghul of pre-Islamic Arabian folklore, a shape-shifting desert demon that lured travelers off the road and ate them, and it entered English through the 1786 novel Vathek and Antoine Galland's Arabian Nights, where the story of Sidi Nouman's grave-eating bride fixed the modern image. Ghouls became tunnel-dwelling corpse-eaters in Lovecraft's Pickman's Model and The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, feral pack undead in Dungeons & Dragons, radiation-scarred survivors in Fallout, and human-looking flesh-eaters in Tokyo Ghoul. Each version names its ghouls differently.

Folkloric and Lovecraftian ghouls tend to keep a human name that has decayed along with them (Richard Upton Pickman, Charnel Tom, Amina Ghula) or go by what they do (Bonepicker, the Gnawer). D&D ghouls, being mindless, are usually named by their masters or by adventurers with harsh, guttural monster names like Ghazrak and Vhrek, and their patron demon lord Doresain gets a mention in most campaigns. Fallout ghouls keep pre-war human names, which is exactly what makes them poignant. Tokyo Ghoul characters use ordinary Japanese names with an alias assigned by investigators (Eyepatch, Rabbit, Gourmet).

The best ghoul names sound like something is missing: a nickname for a lost feature, a title for a job that ended with death, or a once-human name gnawed down to a stub.
