Statue Name Generator
Names for monuments, colossi, idols and public art
Generate statue names for town squares, temples, fantasy maps and public art: civic monuments like The Founder on Horseback, allegories like Victory Unbound, giants like Colossus of Thessmar, cursed figures like The Weeping Sentinel and local nicknames like Old Greenback.
About statue names
Statues get their names in four ways, and this list of 1,000 uses all of them. The plainest is the subject: The Bronze Fisherman, The First Ferryman, Girl with a Kite. Equestrian figures work the same way, with made-up generals (General Harrowick at the Ford). The second way is the place: Colossus of Thessmar and The Harbor Giant of Port Ilvane tell you where to stand on a map. The third is a title the sculptor chose, which is how allegories and modern public art are named: Victory Unbound, Mercy Kneeling, Three Forms Leaning, Monument to an Ordinary Tuesday. The fourth is the name locals use: Old Greenback, The Pigeon King, Shiny Knees.
Fantasy settings get statues with a story attached (The Weeping Sentinel, The Knight Who Blinked, The Bride Turned to Salt), idols and saints of invented faiths, royal likenesses, tomb effigies and ruins such as The Unfinished King. Classical marbles are labeled the museum way: Bust of an Unknown Senator.
Sixteen names belong to famous real statues, from the Statue of Liberty to the Capitoline Wolf, and the FAQ lists them all. The rest are for fictional towns and worlds: the people and saints in them are made up, though a place name or a plain title may still match a real one.
How to choose statue names
- Decide who named it. A plaque name (The Charter Bearer), a sculptor's title (Truth Unarmed) and a local nickname (Leaning Len) can all belong to one statue, and giving a statue two of them makes a town feel lived in.
- For a map landmark, use the place form and swap in your own geography: Colossus of Dorrenmouth and The Lightbearer of Kael Sound are built to take a new place name.
- Put the legend in the name of a fantasy statue. The Statue That Turns at Midnight and The Guardian That Has Not Woken Yet tell players the rumor before anyone rolls a die.
- Titling a real sculpture? Borrow the forms rather than the exact words: a material in the title (Tension Study in Cable and Oak), a bracketed note (Untitled (Corten Arc)) or a plain subject. Search the title yourself before you exhibit, since nothing here has been checked against existing artworks.
- Keep the sixteen real statues as reference points for quizzes, lessons and comparisons. They are not names for a new work.
Frequently asked questions
What are good names for a statue?
It depends on where the statue stands. A town square suits The Founder on Horseback or The Lamplit Scholar, a harbor suits The Titan at the Breakwater, and a garden suits Faun Playing the Pipes or Girl Counting Petals. For a piece of modern public art, try a title such as Soft Monolith or Signal for a Small City.
Which names in the list are real statues?
Sixteen of them: Statue of Liberty, Christ the Redeemer, David, The Thinker, Venus de Milo, The Little Mermaid, Manneken Pis, Winged Victory of Samothrace, The Great Sphinx of Giza, Discobolus, The Burghers of Calais, Augustus of Prima Porta, Angel of the North, Charging Bull, The Dying Gaul and Capitoline Wolf. Every other name is meant for fictional settings and new works. The generals, rulers and saints in those names are made up, although a place name or a plain title can still coincide with a real one somewhere.
How do I name a cursed or magical statue for a D&D campaign?
Name it after what people say happened. The Petrified Paladin and The Oathbreaker in Marble point to a person turned to stone, while The Watcher Whose Eyes Follow and The Idol That Sweats Gold describe what the statue is rumored to do. Creatures of living stone are a different thing, and the gargoyle and golem generators cover those.
Are the saints and gods in these names real?
The saints and the faiths are invented. Names such as Saint Orvel of the Reeds, The Lantern Mother and Idol of the Nine Tides belong to made-up religions, and the Our Lady names use invented places such as Sennmouth. The garden and museum names do borrow gods of Greek and Roman myth, as real garden statuary does: Diana of the Deer Park, The Orangery Venus. None of them is meant as a figure of any living religion.
