Dictatorship Name Generator

Real dictatorships almost never call themselves dictatorships. The pattern, from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the Democratic Kampuchea of the Khmer Rouge, is to stack reassuring words in front of the country: People's, Democratic, Socialist, Federal, National, Sovereign, Free. Military regimes prefer the language of guardianship and emergency (Junta of National Reconstruction, Supreme Military Council, Committee of Public Order, State of Siege), while personalist regimes fold the leader into the state itself, as in the Guide's Jamahiriya or the Estado Novo of a single caudillo. The more words a name needs, the less legitimate the government usually is, and that gap between label and reality is exactly what makes a fictional regime name land.

This generator mixes several registers so you can pick the tone of your world. There are long-form official names for invented countries (People's Democratic Republic of Tashkar, Perpetual Republic of Valdecasa), regime nicknames the way citizens and journalists actually refer to them (The Velkar Junta, The Colonels' Republic, The Ten-Year Emergency), local-language forms like Volksrepublik and República Popular for texture, bare country names with an authoritarian ring, satirical entries like the Republic of Ninety-Nine Percent, and the canon dictatorships of fiction, from Oceania and Panem to Arstotzka and Latveria.
