Generate artwork titles that follow how real artists name their work: descriptive still-life and portrait titles, numbered studies and compositions, one-word abstractions, and evocative phrases for exhibitions. Useful for painters, photographers, sculptors, and anyone labeling a portfolio.
About artwork names
Artwork titles do more than label a piece; they steer the viewer's first look. Museum labels reveal a few dominant styles. Descriptive titles state what is depicted: 'Woman Reading by a North Window', 'Still Life with Lemons and Blue Cloth', 'Reclining Figure, Bronze'. This is the oldest convention and still the most common for figurative painting and sculpture. Series and study titles borrow numbering from music and science ('Composition No. 7', 'Study for a Storm', 'Field Notes II') and suit abstraction or bodies of work meant to hang together. Whistler's musical titles ('Nocturne in Grey and Silver', 'Arrangement in Ochre') remain a favorite way to say the piece is about color rather than subject. 'Untitled' with a parenthetical is the modernist option, and a single resonant word (Threshold, Salt, Fold) is the contemporary one.
A title should add something the image cannot: a place, a date, a relationship, a hint of story. 'Portrait of a Girl in Mourning' tells you what to look for in her face; 'Girl with a Cat, 1911' locates the picture in time. Poetic titles work best when they stay concrete. 'The Distance Between Two Chairs' invites the eye; 'Whispers of Eternity' asks it to leave.
The list mixes all of these styles so you can find the register that fits your work.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the title's style to the work's style: descriptive titles for realism, numbered or one-word titles for abstraction, and 'Untitled (…)' when you want the image to speak first.
- Add a specific noun, place, or year to any poetic title; concreteness is what separates a gallery title from a greeting card.
- For a series, choose a naming scheme up front (Roman numerals, No. 1, dates) so later pieces slot in without renaming the earlier ones.
- Keep titles under about eight words; wall labels, Instagram captions, and auction listings all truncate long ones.
- Read your titles as a list before a show; if three in a row start with 'The', vary the structure so the checklist reads well.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to title my artwork at all?
No, but 'Untitled' has become a title of its own with modernist connotations. Most galleries and juried shows require some title, and a specific one helps buyers remember and search for the piece.
How do artists usually title abstract paintings?
Common approaches are numbered series (Composition No. 12), color or material notes (Study in Cadmium), musical forms (Nocturne, Fugue), or a single evocative word. The title gives a way in without dictating what the viewer should see.
Can two artworks have the same title?
Yes. Titles are not copyrighted, and dozens of paintings share names like 'Bathers' or 'Interior with Red Curtain'. Only the artwork itself is protected, so reuse is legal, though a distinctive title makes your piece easier to find.
Should the title describe the piece or interpret it?
Either works, but be deliberate. Descriptive titles let the viewer discover meaning; interpretive titles frame it. Many artists use a descriptive title with an interpretive subtitle, such as 'House by the Railway (Elegy)'.
