About landmark names

Real landmarks are almost always named for what they look like or what people believed happened there. Rock formations get body-part and figure names: the Old Man of Storr, the Devil's Thumb, the Three Sisters, the Sleeping Giant, Half Dome. Giants and devils explain odd rocks, giving us the Giant's Causeway and the Devil's Marbles. Built landmarks are named for function and patron: the Lion Gate, the Ishtar Gate, the Bridge of Sighs, the Column of Trajan, the Tower of the Winds. Standing stones take counting names (the Nine Maidens) or petrification legends (the Merry Maidens were dancers turned to stone).

Good fantasy landmarks follow the same logic. Start with the definite article, which signals that there is only one; then choose a structure: descriptor plus noun (the Weeping Colossus, the Cracked Bell), noun 'of' something (the Gate of Ninefold Kings, the Well of Souls), or possessive (the Titan's Stair, the Dragon's Teeth). Attaching a proper name (the Sphinx of Anhet, the Aqueduct of Segovar) turns a generic wonder into a specific place with a builder and a history. Numbers, especially three, seven, nine and ten thousand, add mythic weight.

  • Attach a legend in the name itself; the Widow's Leap or the Bleeding Tree implies a story your players or readers will ask about.
  • Give built monuments a patron or place name (the Column of Ten Kings, the Great Dam of Marib) so they feel like they were commissioned rather than spawned.
  • Use one landmark as a navigation reference in dialogue ('turn west at the Kingstone') and it will become the most memorable place on your map.
  • Mix scales: pair grand wonders such as the Colossus of Var with humble local landmarks like the Meeting Oak or the Market Cross to make a region feel lived in.
