Generate Glitch names for Starbound characters, colony tenants and fan fiction: welded compounds like Ironbolt, Tinhelm and Rustcog, courtly forms like Dame Goldpiston and Baron Ironhinge, trade names like Miller Tinpail and plain outcast names like Asks-Why.

About Starbound Glitch names

The Glitch are Starbound's robots who live as if the Middle Ages never ended. They farm, forge and joust under kings, and they open a sentence by naming its mood: "Curious." or "Alarmed." comes before the rest. A name in their style is one welded compound: a metal or material joined to a part, a tool or a piece of armor, as in Ironbolt, Coppergear, Tinhelm and Rustcog.

The list varies what surrounds that shape. Plain compounds are built on metals, on wear words such as rust, soot and oil, on clockwork and steam terms, and on farm words for villagers like Barleybolt and Cheesewire. Court names put a title in front, as in Sir Brassgauntlet or Dame Goldpiston, and the grandest add a seat or an epithet: Baron Ironmantle of Rivethold. Peasants and smiths carry a trade (Miller Tinpail, Cogwright), a home (Rustlatch of Oldgate) or a by-name such as Leadfoot.

In the game's lore most Glitch share one collective mind, and the few who become self-aware are cast out. For those outcasts there are plainer chosen names, such as Asks-Why, Own Mind and Unbolted. All 1,000 names were made up in the style for players' own characters. None is quoted from the game's name tables, and this page has no connection to the game's makers.

How to choose Starbound Glitch names

  • Match the name to the station. A knight or noble suits a title and a bright metal (Sir Chromevisor, Lady Silverspindle), while a villager suits a trade or a worn part (Tinker Bentspoon, Creakhinge of Doorhurst).
  • Keep the compound to two parts. One material and one part reads as a Glitch name; anything more belongs in a title, a home or an epithet, as in Sir Bronzeshanks the Unrusted.
  • For a colony of tenants, give each household a shared word, such as a metal or a trade, and vary the second half, so the forge family, the mill family and the garrison are easy to tell apart.
  • Let an outcast's name mark the break. A Glitch who has left the collective can drop the compound for a plain chosen name like Query or Named Myself, or keep the old one as a reminder of home.
  • In dialogue, put the mood word first and save the full name for introductions: "Proud. I am Dame Pistonheart the Steady."

Frequently asked questions

What does a Glitch name look like?

The style players know is a single compound word that joins a metal or material to a mechanical part or a piece of gear. This list follows it with names like Ironbolt, Brassrivet, Zincspring and Tinhelm, then adds titles, trades and homes around the same core.

Are these the names the game generates?

No. They were made up in the Glitch style for this list and are not taken from the game's own name tables, so a name here may or may not match one the game can roll. This is a fan page and is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

What is a good name for a Glitch knight?

Put a title in front of a compound built on armor or a bright metal: Sir Brassgauntlet, Dame Valorvambrace or Sir Gauntletgrip the Firm. For a lord with lands, add the seat, as in Baron Ironmantle of Rivethold or Dame Silvercog of Brasskeep.

What should I call a self-aware Glitch outcast?

In the lore, Glitch who become self-aware are cast out by the rest. The list gives them plain names they might choose for themselves, such as Asks-Why, Own Mind, Left the Keep and Blank Slate. Keeping the old compound, like Rustcog, also works for a character who still honors where it came from.
