Generate Hylotl names for Starbound characters, OCs and colony tenants: short names like Kairo and Mizuna, sea names like Sazanami and Kuroshio, titles like Curator Shiomi and Ronin Hagure, and epithets like Aoi of the Third Reef.

About Hylotl names

The Hylotl are the amphibious, three-eyed people of Starbound. They build their cities under the sea, prize art and learning, and hold to an ideal of peace. Their look borrows from Japan, old and new, so the personal names here keep to Japanese sounds: open syllables, five vowels, and n as the only consonant that closes a syllable.

The 1,000 names come in several kinds. Short ones such as Kairo, Seto and Nagi are easy to call across a dome, while longer ones like Kairoshi and Mizunari sound more formal. Many are Japanese words of the sea and the rain, such as Sazanami, Kuroshio and Shigure, and others belong to the studio and the garden: Suzuri, Tomoshibi, Momiji. Real given names and old-fashioned forms like Gozaemon and Oharu sit beside names that only follow the sound.

About a quarter of the entries carry a title or a home. Scholar, Curator and Envoy suit the learned, Ronin, Duelist and Exile suit those who left the cities, and Captain and Merchant fit a starship crew. The titles and the places in epithets such as Aoi of the Third Reef are inventions for this page. Koichi, the museum curator in the game, is the one name taken from Starbound, and the page is not an official list.

How to choose Hylotl names

  • Pick the name by role. A scholar suits a longer, formal name or a title such as Archivist Sumiyo, a wandering swordsman suits one spare sea word, as in Ronin Kuroshio, and a child of the neon districts suits something short like Hikari or Kirara.
  • Say it aloud in even beats. Each syllable takes the same weight, so Sazanami is sa-za-na-mi. If a four-beat name trips you up at the table, choose a two-beat one such as Nagi.
  • Let a short name grow. Start with Shiomi, and add a home or a title once the character has earned it, the way Curator Shiomi and Aoi of the Third Reef are built.
  • Look up a name before you build a story on it. Many entries are real Japanese words or given names, and the meaning may help your character or clash with it.
  • For a colony or a crew, mix the kinds: a few short names, one old-fashioned elder such as Bunzaemon, and a single titled officer like Captain Hoshinami.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Hylotl name?

Short and calm works well: Kairo, Mizuna, Seto or Nagi. For a stronger taste of the sea, try Sazanami, Uminari or Shiosai. A character with standing can carry a title, as in Curator Shiomi or Scholar Sazanami.

Are these names from Starbound?

Koichi, the museum curator, is a character in the game and is included as a reference point. The other names are not taken from the game: they are Japanese words, given names and names that only follow the sound, and the page is not an official list. This site is not affiliated with Chucklefish, the game's developer.

Why do Hylotl names sound Japanese?

The Hylotl of Starbound are styled on Japan, from traditional halls to neon city streets, so names in Japanese sounds fit them. Leaving the English titles and places aside, every name here avoids l, v and th and ends each syllable in a vowel or n. Some entries are real Japanese names or words and others only follow the sound, so check a meaning before you rely on it.

Can I use these names for other sea folk?

Yes. They suit any tabletop or story setting with a calm, learned people of the water. Names like Ronin Kuroshio, Namie of the Kelp Forest and Lorekeeper Tokiyo work well outside Starbound.
