Real operation names follow a few recognisable patterns. The Second World War produced single-word codenames chosen for security rather than swagger: Overlord, Torch, Husky, Bagration, Dynamo. Churchill famously insisted that no mother should have to say her son died in "Operation Bunnyhug", so British planners favoured neutral, dignified words. American staff officers of the era drew from lists of random nouns, which is why the Normandy landings were Neptune and a deception plan could be called Mincemeat.

Since the 1970s the U.S. military has used a two-word system: the first word is drawn from a block assigned to a command, the second is chosen freely. That is where you get names like Urgent Fury, Just Cause, Provide Comfort, and Neptune Spear. Since the Gulf War the naming has also become public-relations aware, giving campaign titles such as Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve. British and Israeli operations still tend toward single words (Granby, Telic, Entebbe, Opera) or short evocative pairs (Wrath of God, Black Buck).

For fiction, match the pattern to the era and the tone. A shadowy raid reads better as Operation Nightjar than as Operation Blood Vengeance, and a large public campaign should sound like a slogan the press can print.
