Generate fantasy store names for the shops that fill a medieval or magical town: apothecaries, smithies, curio dealers, spell-component shops, bakeries, bookbinders, and pawnbrokers, named the way real proprietors would name them. Made for D&D worldbuilding, RPG towns, and fantasy fiction.

About fantasy store names

A believable fantasy store name does two jobs: it tells the customer what is sold, and it hints at the personality of the person selling it. Real medieval and early-modern shops were named for their trade, their sign, or their owner, and that is still the most convincing model. Trade names use the tools of the craft (The Anvil and Ash, Quill and Parchment). Sign names describe the painted board over the door (The Sleeping Cauldron, The Grinning Kobold). Owner names give a sense of lineage and reputation (Hollowell & Daughters, Apothecaries; Thorne & Sons, Bladesmiths).

Alliteration and rhythm matter more than cleverness. Two- and three-word names such as Moth & Moonstone or Bitterroot Physick are easy to remember and fit on a sign; a name that needs a whole sentence to explain will feel like a joke rather than a shop. Adding a period-appropriate trade word (physick, scriptorium, cooperage, spicers, mercantile) instantly grounds a name in the setting, and a single magical noun (alembic, grimoire, familiar) is enough to signal that the shop is not entirely mundane.

Use this list to stock a whole town: pick an apothecary, a smithy, a general store, a bookbinder, and one strange little curio shop, and your players will start asking who owns each one.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose the naming style by neighborhood: owner names and trade names for a respectable merchant street, sign names for the docks and back alleys, and grand emporium names for a wizard's quarter.
  • Include a trade word the party can act on (Apothecary, Bladesmiths, Outfitters) so players know at a glance whether the shop sells what they need.
  • Give the owner a name that matches the sign, then let the shop name become the NPC's nickname; 'Old Grimshaw of the Grimoires' is more memorable than either half alone.
  • Reserve overtly magical names (The Vanishing Cabinet, Bag of Holding & Co.) for a few standout shops; a town where every store is 'enchanted' feels less magical, not more.
  • For a run-down or dodgy shop, use a slightly self-deprecating sign such as The Honest Fence or Skinflint's Secondhand to set the tone before the party walks in.

Frequently asked questions

How were shops named in medieval times?

Most were named after the painted sign that hung outside (the Boar's Head, the Golden Fleece), the owner's name and trade, or the goods themselves. Since many customers could not read, a distinctive sign image mattered more than the written name, which is why fantasy shops in the same style sound so authentic.

What kinds of stores should a fantasy town have?

A general store or mercantile, an apothecary or herbalist, a blacksmith or armorer, an outfitter for travelers, a tailor or cobbler, a baker, and at least one shop for magical goods such as scrolls, components, or curios. Larger towns add jewelers, bookbinders, alchemists, and pawnbrokers.

How do I name a magic shop without it sounding cheesy?

Anchor it in a real object or trade word rather than the word magic itself: The Ninth Candle, Sable's Spell Components, or Astrolabe & Ink all say 'arcane' without shouting it. Save names like Wizard's Wares for a shop that is meant to be a tourist trap.

Can I use these store names in a published module or game?

Yes. The names here are original and free to use in homebrew, published adventures, novels, or video games. The Prancing Pony is a nod to Tolkien and Bag of Holding is a D&D term, so treat those two as playful references rather than trademarks to build a business on.
