About shield names

Shields have been named for as long as swords. Athena's Aegis, the Ancile that fell from the sky for Rome, Svalinn that stood between the world and the sun in Norse myth, and Arthur's Pridwen all show the template: a shield's name is about what it holds back. That is why the best fantasy shield names use words of stillness and resistance (bulwark, ward, bastion, rampart, vigil) where sword names use words of motion and cutting.

Most loot-style names fit one of four shapes. Type plus epithet (Tower Shield of the Last Gate, Targe of the Blooded Moor) is the D&D and World of Warcraft form. Material plus type (Dragonscale Kite Shield, Bronze Hoplon) is the Skyrim and crafting-tier form. Owner heirlooms (Havard's Last Wall, Isolde's Buckler) are the Dark Souls form and make the item a story hook. Single-word titles (Spearbane, Arrowcatcher, Oathkeeper) treat the shield as a character.

The shield vocabulary carries period. A buckler is small and held in the fist; a targe is a Scottish round shield; a heater is the knightly triangle; a kite shield is Norman; a pavise is a crossbowman's standing wall; hoplon, aspis and scutum are Greek and Roman; a rondache is a Renaissance duelist's disc.   • Give a named shield a visible boss or crest (The Serpent Boss, The Raven-Crested Shield) and describe it once in-game; a device on the face is easier for players to remember than a stat line.
