Almost every traditional angel name ends in -el, the Hebrew word for God, and the first half describes the angel's job or quality: Michael asks "Who is like God?", Gabriel is "God is my strength", Raphael "God heals", Uriel "God is my light", Raziel "secret of God". A smaller group ends in -iah or -yah, using the other divine name; these are the 72 angels of the Shem HaMephorash, derived by Kabbalists from three verses of Exodus (Vehuiah, Jeliel, Sitael and so on through Mumiah). Islamic tradition adds Jibril, Mikail, Israfil the trumpeter and Azrael the angel of death, while Zoroastrian scripture supplies the Amesha Spentas such as Vohu Manah and Sraosha.

Only a handful of angels are named in the Bible itself (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael in the Book of Tobit); the great lists come from the Book of Enoch, which names the archangels and the two hundred Watchers who fell (Semyaza, Azazel, Kokabiel, Penemue), from the Talmud and Hekhalot texts (Metatron, Sandalphon, Akatriel), and from medieval grimoires that assigned angels to planets, months and zodiac signs (Zadkiel to Jupiter, Cassiel to Saturn, Ambriel to Gemini).

Because the pattern is so regular, invented angel names are easy to spot and easy to make: pick a Hebrew root for the angel's domain and add -el or -iel.
