Wolf God Name Generator
Divine wolves, pack gods and howling pantheons
Generate wolf god names for pantheons, beast cults and werewolf settings: pack fathers and den mothers, moon-howlers, hunt and famine gods, tribal guardians and world-devouring wolves. The 1,000 names run from Vargoth Moon-Father and Ulfrenna the Grey Mother to title-only gods like The First Howl and Old Hunger.
About wolf god names
A wolf god is rarely just a large wolf. In myth the wolf stands for something a people feared or owed. In Norse myth Fenrir is bound by the gods and breaks free at Ragnarök, while Sköll and Hati chase the sun and the moon. Rome kept the she-wolf who nursed Romulus and Remus in its founding story, and Turkic and Mongol legends trace ruling lines to a wolf ancestor. Most of these figures are monsters, ancestors or spirits rather than gods, so the attested names in this list carry a short label saying what they are.
The rest of the 1,000 names are invented, and built the way cult names usually are. Some pair a personal name with an epithet, on Norse, Latin, Gaelic and steppe-sounding roots: Hrokar Winter-Fang, Vigilax the Unsleeping, Faolan of the Thousand Eyes, Borukhan Sky-Runner. Others are titles only, for gods whose worshippers avoid the name: The First Howl, Old Hunger, She Who Runs Before the Snow.
The names are built around roles rather than sounds: pack fathers and den mothers, moon-howlers, gods of the hunt, winter and famine wolves, guardian and ancestor wolves of a tribe or city, and world-devourers. Decide what your wolf god does for its people, or to them, then pick the name that says it.
How to choose wolf god names
- Give the god a job before a name. A pack father, a famine wolf and a city's guardian ancestor want different sounds: warm kin words for the first, lean hard ones for the second, something a clan could carve over a gate for the third.
- Use two names for one god. Priests can say Vargoth Moon-Father while herders who fear him say only The Breath Behind You, and the gap between the two tells players how each group sees him.
- Match the root to the worshippers. Norse-sounding names suit fjord raiders, Latin-sounding ones a city with temples and legions, Gaelic-sounding ones hill clans, and steppe-sounding ones horse nomads.
- Treat the labelled real figures with care. Fenrir is a bound monster and Asena an ancestor, not gods of wolves, and a name from a living tradition such as Amarok is better left as it is than reinvented.
- For a werewolf setting, pick one god who gives the change and one who judges it, for example Giver of the Second Shape and Judge of the Banished, so the curse has a theology behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Were there real wolf gods in mythology?
A few, and fewer than people expect. Wepwawet was an Egyptian god depicted as a wolf-like or jackal-like canine, and Lupercus was a Roman god tied to the Lupercalia festival. Fenrir, Sköll and Hati are monstrous wolves of Norse myth rather than gods, and Asena is a she-wolf ancestor in Turkic legend. The list labels each attested figure with what it is.
What kinds of names are in this wolf god generator?
All 1,000 names are written to read as deities rather than as animals. You get name-plus-epithet forms such as Vargoth Moon-Father and Ulfrenna the Grey Mother, cult titles such as Lord of the Long Chase and Guardian of the Seven Gates, and title-only gods such as The First Howl and Old Hunger. A small labelled share comes from real mythology.
How do I name a wolf goddess rather than a wolf god?
Look for the den mother and huntress entries, such as Mother of the Warm Den, Lady of the Clean Kill and Faolríon, Queen of the Wolves. Many title-only names, The First Howl among them, carry no gender at all, so they work for a goddess, a god or a deity that is neither.
Can I use these names in a D&D campaign or a novel?
Yes. The invented names are meant for homebrew pantheons, beast cults, druid circles and werewolf settings. They are not taken from a published setting on purpose, but we have not checked them against every game or book, so search a name before you publish with it.
