About seawing names

SeaWings are the glowing, web-footed dragons of the Kingdom of the Sea in Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire, ruled from the Deep Palace by Queen Coral. Canon SeaWings include Tsunami, Coral, Anemone, Auklet, Turtle, Riptide, Whirlpool, Gill, Shark, Moray, Orca, Lagoon, Kelp, Nautilus, Pearl, Fathom, Indigo, Pike, Urchin, Snapper, Tempest, Herring, Abalone and Squid. Nearly every one is a single English word for something you would find in or over the ocean: a fish, a shell, a marine mammal, a seabird, a reef feature, a tide or a storm at sea.

What separates a convincing SeaWing name from filler is specificity. Wave, Blue or Fin sound invented; Wrasse, Cuttlefish, Kittiwake and Spindrift sound like they came out of the books. The royal family leans toward precious or grand words (Coral, Pearl, Anemone, Auklet, Turtle), warriors and guards get predators and rough water (Shark, Barracuda, Riptide, Undertow), scholars and quiet dragons suit shells and reef life (Cowrie, Nautilus, Limpet), and the occasional color such as Indigo or Cerulean nods to their bioluminescent stripes.

Every name here is a single word or a short two-word creature name, matching canon usage, so it drops straight into fanfiction, a Wings of Fire roleplay server or an OC reference sheet.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the word to the dragon's role: precious or delicate sea things (Pearl, Anemone, Moonstone) for royalty, predators and dangerous water (Hammerhead, Maelstrom, Undertow) for soldiers, and shells or reef life (Cowrie, Whelk, Seafan) for scholars and artists.
  • Raid a field guide rather than a thesaurus. Real species like Wobbegong, Oarfish, Sanderling and Nudibranch are almost never taken on roleplay servers and still sound completely canon.
  • Check canon before naming an OC: Tsunami, Coral, Anemone, Auklet, Turtle, Riptide, Whirlpool, Gill, Shark, Moray, Orca, Lagoon, Kelp, Nautilus, Pearl, Fathom, Indigo, Pike and Urchin all belong to established characters.
  • Stay clear of other tribes' territory. Arctic sea words like Narwhal, Walrus and Beluga read as IceWing, and Mangrove is a canon RainWing, so use them only for hybrids or dragons raised near those borders.
  • For a SeaWing hybrid, keep the sea word and let the other tribe shape a second option, or find a word that fits both, like Storm or Typhoon for a SeaWing-SkyWing and Lagoon or Sargassum for a SeaWing-RainWing.

Frequently asked questions

How are SeaWings named in Wings of Fire?

SeaWings take single-word names from the ocean: sea creatures (Shark, Moray, Orca, Squid, Herring), shells and reef life (Coral, Anemone, Abalone, Nautilus, Pearl, Urchin), water movements and storms (Tsunami, Riptide, Whirlpool, Tempest, Current) and the occasional deep-water color like Indigo or Cerulean.

Which SeaWing names are already canon characters?

Major canon SeaWings include Queen Coral, Tsunami, Anemone, Auklet, Turtle, Riptide, Whirlpool, Gill, Shark, Moray, Orca, Lagoon, Kelp, Nautilus, Pearl, Fathom, Indigo, Pike, Urchin, Snapper, Tempest, Herring, Abalone, Squid, Webs, Piranha, Barracuda, Lionfish and Cerulean. They are included here for completeness, but pick something else for an original character.

Can a SeaWing have a color or gemstone name?

Yes. Indigo and Cerulean are canon, and watery blues and greens such as Aquamarine, Teal, Cobalt, Lapis and Larimar fit the tribe's glowing stripes perfectly. Keep them to ocean shades; Scarlet or Saffron would read as SkyWing or RainWing.

Do these names work for sea dragons outside Wings of Fire?

They do. Because each one is an evocative ocean word, they suit a bronze dragon in D&D, a leviathan in an original novel, or any water-dwelling dragon character, not only Wings of Fire roleplay.
