MudWing Name Generator

MudWings in Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire series are named after their swampy home in the Mud Kingdom, and their names follow the same rule as every other tribe: a single, real English word tied to the tribe's environment. Canonical MudWings include Clay, his sibs Reed, Marsh, Umber, Sora, Pheasant, and Crane, their mother Cattail, Queen Moorhen, and Jade Mountain students Ochre and Sepia. The pattern covers four groups of words: mud and earth (Clay, Silt, Loam, Peat), wetland plants (Reed, Cattail, Sedge, Cypress), marsh animals and birds (Crane, Moorhen, Newt, Bullfrog, Crocodile), and earthy brown colors (Umber, Ochre, Sepia, Sienna).

A good MudWing name is short, humble, and a little bit muddy. MudWings are big, warm-blooded, family-focused dragons who live in sibling troops led by a bigwings, so their names tend to sound solid and unpretentious rather than sharp or glamorous, which is what makes them different from SkyWing names like Peril and Scarlet or IceWing names like Winter and Hailstorm. Two-syllable nature words with soft consonants fit especially well.

When naming a whole troop of sibs, pick names from the same group so they sound related, or deliberately vary them the way Clay's family does. Avoid words that belong to another tribe's territory, such as ocean, desert, or ice terms.
