About rainwing names

RainWings are the color-shifting, fruit-eating dragons of the rainforest kingdom in Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire. Canon RainWings include Queen Glory, Kinkajou, Jambu, Tamarin, Mangrove, Orchid, Bromeliad, Liana, Coconut, Mango, Loris, Heliconia and Fruit Bat, plus the long line of vain, nap-loving queens: Grandeur, Magnificent, Dazzling, Splendor and Exquisite. That gives the tribe two naming traditions at once. Most dragons take a single word for something that lives or grows in the rainforest; the royal bloodline and the ambitious take a word for beauty, brilliance or glamour.

A convincing RainWing name is therefore specific and tropical. Generic words like Leaf or Green read as filler (and Leaf is already a LeafWing convention), while real rainforest vocabulary sounds like it came out of the books: Quetzal, Ocelot, Capybara, Tamandua, Passionflower, Rambutan, Mangosteen, Morpho. Fruit and flowers suit gentle, playful dragons; predators like Jaguar and Anaconda suit the rare RainWing who actually wants to fight; colors such as Magenta, Saffron and Viridian nod to their scale-shifting; and a queen contender might be Resplendent or Radiant.

Everything below is a single word or a short two-word animal name, matching how RainWings are named in canon, so you can drop any of them straight into a fanfic, a roleplay server or a Wings of Fire OC sheet.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to personality: fruit and flowers (Papaya, Hibiscus) for sweet or sleepy RainWings, predators and venomous animals (Ocelot, Bushmaster) for the unusual fighters, and beauty words (Radiant, Splendid) for royals or dragons who think they should be.
  • Use a field guide, not a thesaurus. Birds like Motmot, Hoatzin and Oropendola, or fruits like Soursop and Jaboticaba, sound far more canon than made-up compounds and are almost never taken on roleplay servers.
  • Check for canon clashes before naming an OC. Glory, Kinkajou, Jambu, Tamarin, Mangrove, Orchid, Bromeliad, Liana, Grandeur, Magnificent, Dazzling and Exquisite are all established characters.
  • Avoid words owned by other tribes: Coral, Turtle and Anemone are SeaWing, Leaf-words are LeafWing, and sky or fire words are SkyWing. A RainWing named Cobra would confuse readers.
  • For a RainWing hybrid, keep the rainforest word and let the other parent's convention shape a second option, or pick a word that fits both, like Dusk for a RainWing-NightWing or Lagoon for a RainWing-SeaWing.

Frequently asked questions

How are RainWings named in Wings of Fire?

RainWings take single-word names from the rainforest: animals (Kinkajou, Tamarin, Loris), plants and flowers (Orchid, Bromeliad, Liana, Mangrove), fruit (Mango, Coconut, Jambu) and, especially among royalty, words for beauty and brilliance (Glory, Grandeur, Magnificent, Dazzling, Splendor, Exquisite).

Which RainWing names are already canon characters?

Major canon RainWings include Queen Glory, Kinkajou, Jambu, Tamarin, Mangrove, Orchid, Bromeliad, Liana, Coconut, Mango, Loris, Heliconia, Fruit Bat, Gibbon and the former queens Grandeur, Magnificent, Dazzling, Splendor and Exquisite. They appear in this list for completeness, but choose something else for an original character.

Can a RainWing have a color name?

Yes. Because RainWings shift their scale colors with mood, vivid color words like Magenta, Saffron, Viridian, Fuchsia and Tangerine fit the tribe well, and several fan-favorite OCs use them. Just steer clear of Indigo, Coral and Turquoise, which read as SeaWing.

Do these names work for other jungle or rainbow dragons?

They do. Any evocative tropical word works for a jungle dragon in D&D, a feathered serpent character, or a rainbow-scaled dragon in an original story, not just Wings of Fire roleplay.
