Names for original characters in the style of the Deep-Sea Prisoner games: Japanese sea-creature words like Kurage and Hotaruika, backwards words like Rednic and Duolc, sweet coinages like Meringa and Caramella, plus mascots, titled characters and realms.

About Deep-Sea Prisoner names

Deep-Sea Prisoner is the label fans use for the connected worlds of the RPG Maker games The Gray Garden, Mogeko Castle and Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea. The characters are named by a few clear habits, which is why a fan character can sound right with very little effort.

The first habit is a Japanese sea or animal word used as a name: Samekichi is built on same, the word for shark, and Memoca is kamome, seagull, with its syllables turned around. The second is an English word spelled backwards: Kcalb is black, Etihw is white, Wodahs is shadow and Emalf is flame. The third is a sweet, food or color word with an ending changed or its first letters dropped, as in Macarona and Rawberry.

The 1,000 names here follow those habits across sea creatures, land animals, flowers, Japanese sweets, backwards words for gods, devils and angels, dessert and fruit coinages, small mascots, titled characters such as Sea Witch Shiokaze, and realms such as The Indigo Deep. Sixteen characters and one world from the games are included as reference points, and everything else was written for this page. Japanese words are given without meanings, so look a word up before you build a character on it.

How to choose Deep-Sea Prisoner names

  • Pick the habit by role: sea folk and familiars suit Japanese creature words such as Hotaruika or Mendako, while gods, devils and head angels suit backwards words such as Thgindim or Rehtaef.
  • To make your own backwards name, write the word down and reverse it letter by letter, then read what the result spells. Words of five to seven letters, like Tsorf from frost, stay readable.
  • Say a backwards name aloud and decide how you pronounce it before you post the character. People will ask, and Nrocinu or Duolc can be read more than one way.
  • Look a Japanese word up in a dictionary before you use it. This list gives no meanings, and a creature word brings its animal with it, so the design should match.
  • Search the fandom wiki for a name before you settle on it, so your original character does not share a name with a canon one you have not met yet.

Frequently asked questions

How are Deep-Sea Prisoner characters named?

Three habits cover many of them. Japanese sea and animal words become names, as in Samekichi and Memoca; English words are spelled backwards, as in Kcalb, Etihw and Wodahs; and sweets, foods and colors are bent into names, as in Macarona and Rawberry. An original character that follows one of the three sounds at home in that world.

Which names in this list are canon?

Sixteen characters are from the games: Wadanohara, Samekichi, Fukami, Memoca, Dolphi, Etihw, Kcalb, Wodahs, Grora, Yosafire, Froze, Macarona, Rawberry, Dialo, Chelan and Emalf. The Gray Garden is the one canon world. Every other name was written for this page in the same style, so if one happens to match a minor character, that is a coincidence.

How do the backwards names work?

Each one is an ordinary English word reversed letter for letter. Rednic is cinder, Duolc is cloud, Thgindim is midnight and Yenoh is honey. Dark words suit devils and light words suit angels, though the games mix them too: Wodahs, shadow backwards, is an angel.

Can I use these names for my own OC?

Yes. The original names are ordinary words, reversed words and new coinages, so they suit fan characters, fan games and stories. Leave the sixteen canon names to the characters they belong to, and search the fandom for an existing OC with the same name if that matters to you.
