Generate scythe names with real weight behind them: harvest and moon imagery, funeral bells, reaper epithets and cursed relic titles. Built for D&D and Pathfinder weapons, Dark Souls-style boss drops, anime shinigami and original fantasy fiction.
About scythe names
Scythes carry more symbolism than almost any other fantasy weapon, and a good name leans into it. The blade was a farm tool before it was a weapon, so the richest names borrow from the harvest: furrows, sheaves, gleaning, threshing, chaff, the fallow year. Because Death has carried one since medieval plague art, the second great well is funerary: knells, shrouds, vespers, requiems, the ferryman, the widow. The curved blade itself suggests a waning or sickle moon, which gives you crescent, arc, hook and horn. Mix two of those three wells and the name sounds like a scythe rather than a generic sword.
Structure matters as much as vocabulary. Single compounds (Duskreaper, Ashfurrow) suit common magic items. Two-word titles with an article (The Last Furrow, The Pale Hour) suit relics in a loot table. An invented proper name with an epithet (Vesperine, the Quiet Harvest) suits a boss weapon or a sentient blade that has its own history. Latin, Greek and Slavic words for the tool (falx, harpe, kosa) add age, and the Japanese kama and ōgama fit shinigami characters.
Place your scythe in a hand before you name it. A grim reaper's blade wants quiet, patient words. A death knight's wants iron and blood. A harvest goddess's wants barley, moonlight and grief.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pull from two of the three scythe image families at once, harvest, funeral and moon, so the name reads as a scythe and not a generic blade: Widow's Crescent, Harvest of Sorrows.
- Use the article form (The Last Furrow, The Ninth Bell) for relics and loot, and the proper name plus epithet form (Aldegrim, Keeper of Furrows) for boss weapons and sentient blades.
- Keep the word reaper rare. One Duskreaper in a campaign is memorable; five of them turn the weapon list into wallpaper.
- Match the tone to the wielder: a merciful psychopomp carries Quietus or The Kindly Ending, a plague lord carries Rotwhisper or Blightmower, a harvest deity carries Persephone's Sheaf or Ashes and Barley.
- For stat blocks, give the name a one-line legend, such as who mowed what with it, and let the name echo that story rather than describing the weapon's damage.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a scythe name sound different from a sword name?
Scythe names draw on the harvest (furrow, sheaf, gleaning), funerals (knell, shroud, requiem) and the crescent moon. Sword names usually lean on fire, light, kings and oaths. Swap in farm and funeral vocabulary and the name immediately reads as a reaping blade.
Are these names good for a D&D or Pathfinder scythe?
Yes. The single-word compounds work for +1 and +2 items, the article titles suit rare and very rare relics, and the named epithet forms are built for legendary or sentient weapons. Add a sentence of lore about the previous owner and the name will stick at the table.
Can I use these for a grim reaper or shinigami character?
Absolutely. For a Western reaper choose quiet, patient names such as The Pale Hour or Vesperine, the Quiet Harvest. For a shinigami or anime-style reaper, the kama and ōgama names or a Japanese-flavored moon name like Ōgama Tsukikage fit better.
Do real mythological scythes have names?
A few. Cronus used an adamantine sickle called a harpe to overthrow Uranus, Perseus carried a harpe against Medusa, and Slavic folklore gives Morana and Marzanna a reaping blade. Most named scythes are modern inventions from games and anime, so there is plenty of room to coin your own.
