About scholar names
A scholar's name usually tells you where and when they studied. In the ancient Mediterranean a learned person was known by a given name and a home city, so Eratosthenes of Cyrene and Hypatia of Alexandria sit naturally beside an invented Kallisto of Rhodes. Medieval schoolmen were named for a birthplace or monastery (Robert Grosseteste, Adelard of Bath, Herrad of Landsberg) and the greatest earned Latin epithets such as Doctor Subtilis or Doctor Mirabilis. Islamic polymaths carry Ibn and al- names recording a father or hometown, Confucian literati are written surname first (Zhu Xi, Ban Zhao), and Renaissance humanists Latinized themselves into Conradus Gesnerus.
Modern academics are plainer: a title and a full name, Professor Ingrid Halvorsen or Dr. Tobias Okonkwo, with Herr Doktor, Dottore, Academician and Pandit marking the country. Fantasy settings borrow from all of these, which is why Archivist, Loremaster, Keeper of Scrolls and Master of Tongues read as instantly scholarly even when the name after them is invented.
This list mixes real historical scholars with original names that follow the same conventions, so pick the era and tradition first, then the name that fits. Epithets like the Antiquary or the Blind Scholar of Merida suit fiction, where one label can stand in for a whole career.
Tips for choosing a name
- Choose the tradition before the name: city-name for antiquity, place-name or Latin epithet for medieval Europe, Ibn or al- for the Islamic world, surname-first for East Asia, title plus full name for anything after 1700.
- Give a fantasy scholar a post as well as a name (Archivist, Loremaster, Keeper of Scrolls, Master of Numbers); the office does more characterizing work than the name alone.
- Use epithets sparingly. One Doctor Mirabilis or one Blind Scholar of Merida per story is memorable; five are noise.
- For modern academics, vary the honorific: Professor, Dr., Herr Doktor, Academician, Pandit and Dottore each place the character in a different country and system.
- If you are borrowing a real historical scholar for a cameo, check the dates; Hypatia cannot share a reading room with Erasmus unless your setting allows it.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound like a scholar?
Either a title that signals learning (Professor, Doctor, Magister, Archivist, Loremaster, Pandit, Master of Tongues) or a naming pattern tied to a learned tradition, such as the Greek given-name-plus-city form or the medieval Latin honorific. A plain name becomes scholarly the moment you attach the post the person holds.
Can I use these names for D&D or fantasy worldbuilding?
Yes. The archivist, loremaster, sage and Keeper of Scrolls entries are written for fantasy libraries, mage towers and royal courts, and the historical patterns (Anaxikles of Samos, Walter of Merthyr, Hakim Farzan Nishapuri) transplant easily into invented kingdoms with a change of place-name.
Are the historical scholars in this list real people?
Many are: Eratosthenes, Hypatia, Ibn Sina, Zhu Xi, Maimonides, Erasmus, Ban Zhao and Émilie du Châtelet, among others, all lived. They appear alongside invented names built on the same conventions, so read the list as a mix of reference and inspiration rather than a roster of real people.
How do I name a female scholar in a historical setting?
Follow the women who really held those roles: Hypatia of Alexandria, Hildegard of Bingen, Fatima al-Fihri, Ban Zhao, Laura Bassi, Mary Somerville. For invented characters, use the same forms as their male contemporaries, such as Lysandra of Pergamon, Sister Audra of Wilton or Dottore Lucrezia Farnese.
