Most are named either by topic (Soft Matter and Biophysics Group, Urban Climate Resilience Group) or by the principal investigator's surname (Rasmussen Research Group), sometimes combined (Kaur Group for Plant Genomics). Cross-department groups often use a capitalised backronym such as HELIX or MOSAIC, and larger units use Centre, Institute, Network or Consortium.

An acronym helps if the group spans several topics or institutions and needs a memorable badge for posters and funding calls. It hurts if the expansion is forced, if the acronym already means something in your field, or if it makes the group's topic invisible.
