Scientist Name Generator

A good scientist name makes the character feel like someone with a CV, a lab and a publication record before they say a word. Real research is international, so believable casts draw surnames from many places at once. A plausible department roster might include Halvorsen, Venkataraman, Okonkwo, Novotny and Marchand in the same sentence, and that mix is what readers now expect. A cast where every scientist has an Anglo-Saxon surname reads as dated; one where every name is an obvious joke reads as comedy.

Titles matter. "Dr." is the default for anyone with a PhD or MD, while "Professor" signals a senior academic with a faculty post. In fiction, pairing a title with a full name (Dr. Ingrid Halvorsen) reads as formal introduction; using the surname alone (Halvorsen) is how colleagues, lab notes and press quotes refer to working scientists. Two- and three-syllable surnames with a hard consonant (Brandt, Keller, Tavakoli, Whitcombe) tend to land best on the page because they are easy to say repeatedly.
