Generate RimWorld names in the game's own style: colonists in the First "Nickname" Last format, single-name tribals, colony and settlement names, outlander unions, pirate bands and planet names. Handy for renaming pawns, starting a new colony or building custom scenarios and mods.

About RimWorld names

RimWorld names have a house style players recognise instantly. Colonists carry three parts: a first name, a nickname in quotation marks and a surname, shown in-game as Mara "Rook" Castellan. The nickname appears over the pawn's head and in every colony log, so it matters most. Good ones are one short word with a little grit or warmth (Sparks, Mutt, Sawbones, Bramble); the game's name pool leans on trades, tools, animals and weather rather than heroic epithets. Tribal pawns use a single name of one or two syllables, like Oki, Tuka or Dakom, with no surname.

Places follow a different logic. Player colonies tend to get hopeful or wry names that comment on the crash landing: Hope's Landing, New Arrival, Crashsite Hollow, Fort Muffalo. Outlander towns read like frontier settlements (Redpool, Greymont, Stonecrop Station), tribal camps borrow tribal syllables, and pirate bases take names like Crowfoot Den. Factions are named by type: outlander unions and confederacies, tribes named for a people or landmark, pirate bands with a violent animal or colour, and the Empire with grand houses and stellarchs.

Planets are generated as two- or three-syllable words that sound vaguely classical or alien (Caldris, Nebira, Orvaine). One planet, one colony and a roster of nicknamed colonists gives a new save its own identity before the first raid arrives.

How to choose RimWorld names

  • Keep colonist nicknames to one word; it is what shows in the colonist bar and in every message, so Sawbones beats The Honourable Doctor.
  • Give tribal pawns a single short name (Oki, Kalu, Tokuro) and no surname; if you later recruit them to an outlander colony, adding a surname marks the change.
  • Name your colony after the landing, the biome or the first disaster: Crashsite Hollow, Frostwater and Fort Muffalo all read as things a stranded crew would actually call home.
  • Match faction names to their type: unions and confederacies for outlanders, tribe or people names for tribals, animals and colours for pirates, houses and domains for the Empire.
  • Planet names should be short and a little alien, two or three syllables with no obvious English words; Caldris and Nebira feel like the rim, New Earth does not.

Frequently asked questions

How are RimWorld colonist names formatted?

As First "Nickname" Last, for example Dov "Sparks" Halloran. The nickname is displayed above the pawn and in logs. You can rename any colonist by clicking their name in the Bio tab and editing the three fields; tribal pawns usually have only a single name.

Can I rename my colony, faction or planet in RimWorld?

Yes. You name the colony and faction when you found a settlement, and you can change them later from the World tab by clicking your faction. The planet name is set when the world is generated, but you can type in your own on the world generation screen.

What makes a name sound like RimWorld rather than generic sci-fi?

Understatement. RimWorld nicknames are short and workaday (Mutt, Rust, Patch), colonies are named with dry frontier humour (Dustbowl, New Arrival), and planets are quiet made-up words. Avoid grand titles and military jargon unless the pawn is from the Empire.

Can I use these names in a RimWorld mod or custom scenario?

Yes. None of the names here are from the game's backer name lists or based on real people, so they are safe to drop into a custom name bank, a scenario preset or a faction mod.
