About kenshi names
Kenshi is a sandbox RPG set on a dying desert moon, and its names reflect that odd, scavenged world. Named characters range from plain nicknames (Burn, Beep, Red, Ghost) to mash-ups of English, Japanese and invented sounds (Ruka, Sadneil, Izumi, Crumblejon), to titles that double as reputations (Bugmaster, Dust King, Screamer the False, Rane the Giant). There is no polished high-fantasy naming here; a good Kenshi name sounds like it was earned in the dirt.
Each race has its own flavour. Greenlanders and Scorchlanders use short, everyday names with a Japanese or vaguely European tinge (Kang, Seto, Hobbs, Ray). Shek names are hard and consonant-heavy (Kral, Esata, Bayan, Ohsun), fitting a warrior culture that names its leaders after their deeds. Skeletons often carry mechanical or oddly human names (Agnu, Sadneil, Burn, Cat-Lon), while Hivers get tiny, functional names (Beep, Rip, Wasp) or their role in the hive. Faction leaders add rank: Emperor Tengu, Lord Phoenix, Empress Sinta.
The list above mixes canon-style names, single-word wasteland nicknames, race-flavoured given names and full titles so you can name an entire squad, a base, or a custom faction in one pass without every recruit sounding the same.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the race: hard consonants for Shek (Kral, Verrak), tiny chirpy names for Hivers (Beep, Nib), and mechanical or oddly formal names for Skeletons (Chassis, Unit Marn).
- Give recruits nicknames based on what happened to them: One-Eye, Handless, Bent Nail. Kenshi's limb loss and scars make earned names feel natural.
- For faction leaders and base names, add a title (Lord, Empress, Inquisitor, Captain) to make them read like Kenshi's canon bosses.
- Keep squad names short so they stay readable in the squad panel; save the long titles for your player character or key NPCs in a mod.
- Mix cultures deliberately. Kenshi's world lost its history, so a squad with a Japanese-sounding Yayoi next to a Trask and a Bruk feels right.
Frequently asked questions
How do character names work in Kenshi?
Kenshi assigns random names from race-specific pools when NPCs spawn, and named unique characters like Beep, Ruka or Tinfist have handcrafted names. Player characters and recruits can be renamed freely at creation or via the character panel.
Are these the actual random names Kenshi uses?
The list includes many canon unique characters (Beep, Agnu, Rane the Giant, Cat-Lon) alongside original names written to match each race's style, so you can name mod NPCs or squads without repeating the game's own pool.
What do Shek and Skeleton names sound like?
Shek names are short and heavy with K, R and hard vowels (Kral, Esata, Bayan). Skeletons tend to have blunt or mechanical names (Burn, Sadneil, Agnu) or descriptive labels that hint at their age and lost purpose.
Can I use these names in a Kenshi mod or story?
Yes. The original names here are free to use in mods, fan fiction, or squad rosters. Canon character names belong to Lo-Fi Games' setting, so use them as inspiration rather than for commercial products.
