Generate planet names that fit the Halo universe: UNSC colonies like Reach, Harvest and Tribute, Covenant homeworlds like Sanghelios and Doisac, Forerunner sites like Requiem, and hundreds of original worlds in the same styles for fan fiction, Forge maps and tabletop campaigns.

About halo planet names

Halo's human colonies are named the way a hopeful, slightly bureaucratic spacefaring Earth would name them. The Inner Colonies borrow from classical and religious history (Reach, Troy, Actium, New Jerusalem, New Constantinople), while Outer Colonies often carry plain virtue or farming words that say what the settlers wanted the place to be: Harvest, Harmony, Tribute, Concord, Bliss, Ballast. A third UNSC convention is the catalog designation, where the planet is simply the nth world of a star, as in Circinius IV, Jericho VII, Sigma Octanus IV or Eridanus II. Mixing these three registers is what makes a list of colonies feel like the Halo star map rather than generic space opera.

Covenant worlds sound nothing like that. Sangheili names are guttural and clipped, with hard consonants, doubled vowels and occasional apostrophes: Sanghelios, Hesduros, Malurok, Qikost, Suban. Jiralhanae and Unggoy worlds (Doisac, Balaho) follow the same pattern, while Covenant-held colonies sometimes carry translated honorifics such as Joyous Exultation. Forerunner locations are grander and stranger: Requiem, Genesis, Maethrillian, Charum Hakkor, or simply Installation 04 and Shield World 0459.

This generator mixes canon Halo planets with original names written in each of those conventions, so you can populate a fan fiction, a custom campaign or a Forge map with worlds that sit naturally beside Reach and Sanghelios.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the faction that settled it: classical or Earth-city names for Inner Colonies, virtue and farming words for Outer Colonies, harsh consonants and apostrophes for Covenant worlds, and formal or numbered designations for Forerunner sites.
  • Use a Roman numeral only when you want the planet to feel like a surveyed system rather than a home. Jericho VII reads like a military objective; Harvest reads like somewhere people were born.
  • Give important worlds a star too. Reach orbits Epsilon Eridani, Harvest orbits Epsilon Indi; pairing an original colony with a real nearby star makes it feel anchored in the same map.
  • Keep Covenant names short and consonant-heavy with at most one apostrophe. Two apostrophes or a string of vowels starts to sound like a different franchise.
  • Decide the planet's status in the war, then let it colour the name. A glassed colony works well with a hopeful name (Bliss, Verity) for contrast; a fortress world suits something like Bulwark or Bastion.

Frequently asked questions

How are UNSC colony planets named in Halo?

Three ways, usually. Many are named for places and events from Earth history (Reach, Troy, Actium, Skopje, New Jerusalem), many Outer Colonies carry simple virtue or agricultural words (Harvest, Harmony, Tribute, Concord, Minister), and some are catalog designations made of a star name plus a Roman numeral, like Circinius IV or Sigma Octanus IV.

What do Covenant planet names sound like?

Sangheili worlds such as Sanghelios, Hesduros, Qikost and Suban are short, hard-consonant names with doubled vowels and occasional apostrophes; Jiralhanae and Unggoy homeworlds (Doisac, Balaho) follow suit. Covenant-controlled colonies are sometimes known by translated titles like Joyous Exultation. Forerunner worlds are different again, either evocative single words (Requiem, Genesis) or formal designations (Installation 04, Shield World 0459).

Are these names canon to Halo?

Roughly a quarter are canon planets, moons and installations drawn from the games and novels (Reach, Harvest, Sanghelios, Requiem and others). The rest are original names written in the same conventions, so they are safe to use for your own fan fiction, Forge maps and tabletop campaigns without contradicting established lore.

Can I use these Halo planet names in fan fiction or a custom game?

Yes. The original names are free to use anywhere. Canon names belong to the Halo setting, which is fine for fan works, machinima and custom maps, but for an original published sci-fi universe pick from the invented entries or adapt the conventions rather than reusing established Halo worlds.
