About ratfolk names

Ratfolk names work best when they sound like something a rat could actually say: short, front-loaded with clicks and hisses, and over fast. Pathfinder's ysoki set the template with given names like Aliskeh, Kotchi, Raskiri, Tiskim and Vorsk, built on sk, tch, kk and zz sounds with light vowels. Warhammer's Skaven push the same phonology into menace (Queek, Skrittar, Thanquol) and add a boastful epithet or clan-style surname (Headtaker, Warpsnout, Gnawtooth). Wererats and city-warren rats in D&D tend instead toward human thieves' cant nicknames: Nibs, Scritch, Twitch, Tallow, Pipewhistle.

Surnames usually describe where a rat lives or what it does rather than ancestry. Burrow and tunnel words (Underwall, Draintunnel, Cellarby), scavenged materials (Coppertooth, Scrapwhisker, Rustmaw), food (Cheeserind, Grainthief, Currant) and the rat's own body (Ninetails, Greywhisk, Pinkpaw) all fit. How to choose ratfolk names

  • Keep given names to one or two syllables and lean on sk, tch, kk, zz and rr; if you cannot squeak it in one breath, it is too long for a rat.
  • Pick a surname from the rat's life, not a family tree: what it scavenges (Scrapwhisker), where it sleeps (Undercroft), what it eats (Cheeserind) or how it looks (Ninetails).
  • For Skaven-style villains, add a boastful epithet (Headtaker, Doomsnout) and repeat a syllable (Skrit-Skrit, Queek) to get the twitchy cadence of the species.
  • For wererats hiding in a human city, use an ordinary human name plus a street or trade nickname (Hollis Tallowmarch, Nell Quietpaw) so the rat side only shows in the epithet.
  • Cozy or heroic ratfolk sound friendlier with herb, grain and bird names (Tansy, Barley, Wren) paired with a domestic surname (Pottersfield, Hearthrug, Alehouse).

What do Pathfinder ysoki names sound like?
