Generate names for humanoid alien species with the linguistic texture of real demonyms: varied endings (-i, -an, -ite, -ari, -eshi, -aar), plausible root words, and forms that work for both the people and their homeworld. Built for sci-fi novels, Stellaris and Traveller campaigns, and original settings.
About humanoid species names
The most convincing humanoid species names behave like real-world demonyms: they carry an ending that marks "people of" and a root that could plausibly be a homeworld, a founding clan, or a word in the species' own language. Star Trek's Bajorans come from Bajor, Mass Effect's Asari and Turians take Latin-flavored plural endings, and Star Wars' Twi'leks and Zabraks use a hard consonant cluster to sound alien to English ears. What all of these avoid is the lazy pattern of a random English word plus -ian (Crystalians, Quantumites), which reads as placeholder text rather than a culture.
Endings do a lot of the work. Soft vowel endings (-ari, -eshi, -ani, -une) suggest an old, cultured, or diplomatic species; clipped consonant endings (-ek, -uk, -ath, -oth) suggest hardier or more martial peoples; Latin-style plurals (-idae, -ae, -im) suggest a scholarly or hive-like species catalogued by outsiders. Star-derived names (Aldebarani, Rigelians, Denebi) are a quick way to tie a species to a real place in the sky, and readers accept them instantly.
Decide whether the name is what the species calls itself or what others call them. An endonym is often short and vowel-heavy (Kessari); an exonym given by human explorers might be a star name plus a suffix or a plain descriptor. Using both in your setting is a small detail that makes the galaxy feel inhabited.
Tips for choosing a name
- Derive the species name and homeworld from the same root (Kessari from Kessar, Thalveshi from Thalvesh) so a reader can connect the two without being told.
- Choose the ending to signal culture: -ari and -eshi feel refined, -uk and -ath feel rugged, -idae and -im feel formally catalogued.
- Give the species an endonym they use and an exonym humans use, and let characters slip between them to show familiarity or contempt.
- Keep it to two or three syllables for a species readers will meet often; save longer names for rare or ancient peoples.
- Say the singular, plural, and adjective forms aloud (a Voruun, the Voruun, Voruun ships) and pick a name that works in all three.
Frequently asked questions
How do sci-fi writers usually name alien species?
Most derive the species name from its homeworld or from a real star (Bajorans, Rigelians), or invent a short endonym with a distinctive sound such as Asari, Minbari, or Zabrak. The best names avoid English root words that reveal the species' single defining trait.
Should the species name and planet name match?
Usually they share a root, the way Vulcans come from Vulcan and Bajorans from Bajor. Deliberately mismatching them can also be meaningful, for example a species named for a diaspora rather than its lost homeworld.
Are the famous franchise species in this list safe to use?
Names like Asari, Twi'lek, and Kryptonian are included for reference and inspiration only. They belong to their franchises, so use the original names in this list for anything you plan to publish or sell.
How do I make a humanoid species feel different from humans with just a name?
Use sound patterns English rarely uses: doubled vowels (Voruun, Ghaduun), apostrophe glottal stops (Aur'kesh), or unusual clusters (Cthaari, Zhukath). Then stay consistent with those sounds when naming individuals from that species.
