About Costa Rican names
A Costa Rican's legal name has one or two given names followed by two surnames: the father's first, then the mother's. Every entry here follows that order, so Juan Rafael Zamora Araya is filed under Zamora and his mother was an Araya. The family names are the ones you meet most in the country: Mora, Jiménez, Vargas, Rojas, Solís, Chaves (usually spelled with an s here), Quesada, Zúñiga, Alfaro, Villalobos, Araya and Chacón, with rarer Central Valley names such as Azofeifa, Alpízar, Bogantes and Víquez mixed in.
Given names date a character quickly. Grandparents answer to Abelardo, Tranquilino or Pacífica. The generation born from the 1960s to the 1980s carries names that are rare elsewhere in the same form: Olman, Olger, Minor, Xinia, Hannia, Yorleny, Zulay. After them come Keylor, Yeltsin and Kimberly, and today's babies are Santiago, Mateo, Sofía and Isabella, as in much of Latin America.
Two regions stand apart. Guanacaste, which chose to join Costa Rica in 1824, keeps surnames such as Matarrita, Baltodano, Briceño, Viales and Cabalceta. On the Caribbean coast, families descended from Jamaican railway and banana workers carry English names, as in Winston Grant McKenzie and Marva Wilson Drummond. How to choose Costa Rican names
- Read the first surname as the father's family and the second as the mother's. In daily life a Tico goes by given name and first surname, so María Fernanda Zumbado Morales is María Fernanda Zumbado on a business card.
- Match the given name to the birth year. Olger, Xinia and Yorleny suit someone born between about 1960 and 1985, while Keylor and Nazareth suit a character born after 1990.
- Use region for backstory: a Matarrita or a Cabalceta points to Guanacaste, a McKenzie or a Hylton to Limón, an Azofeifa or a Bogantes to the Central Valley.
- Keep the accents. Solís, Chacón, Zúñiga and Jiménez carry them on Costa Rican documents, and leaving them off changes how the name is read aloud.
- Siblings share both surnames in the same order, so you can build a family by keeping the last two words of an entry and changing the given name.

Why do Costa Ricans have two surnames?
The custom comes from Spain. A child takes the father's first surname followed by the mother's first surname, and both appear on the identity card. A woman does not change her name when she marries, so the parents and children of one household often carry three different surname pairs.
Why do some Costa Ricans have English names?
Limón province on the Caribbean coast was settled in large part by workers from Jamaica and other islands, who came from the 1870s to build the railway and work the banana plantations. Their descendants keep English given names and surnames, often set in the Spanish two-surname order. What does Tico mean?
Tico and Tica are what Costa Ricans call themselves. The nickname is usually traced to the local habit of ending diminutives in "tico", as in chiquitico. It is a friendly everyday word, and you will hear it far more often than costarricense.
