Cuban names follow Spanish custom with a few twists you will not find anywhere else in Latin America. Every Cuban carries two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's, so a birth certificate reads Lázaro Rodríguez Fuentes even if friends only ever say Rodríguez. The commonest surnames are Rodríguez, Pérez, González, Hernández, García, Martínez and Fernández, but the island also has its own signature names, many of them Galician, Asturian and Canarian in origin: Valdés, Sotolongo, Hechavarría, Torriente, Sardiñas, Zequeira, Peñalver, Oramas and Fariñas mark a family as Cuban almost instantly.

Given names split sharply by generation. Cubans born before 1960 tend to have saints' and compound names (José Antonio, Caridad, Lázaro, Mercedes, Regla) that often double as nods to Santería orishas. From the 1970s on, parents invented a whole new style: names beginning with Y (Yusniel, Yanet, Yoandri, Yailén, Yamilé), Soviet-era imports like Vladimir, Tatiana and Liudmila, and built-from-syllables names such as Dayana, Maikel and Odalys. A realistic cast mixes all three layers, and almost everyone goes by a nickname at home: Pepe, Cachita, Cuco, Yiyo, Papito.
