About taino names

Taíno names come from the Arawakan language spoken across the Greater Antilles—Borikén (Puerto Rico), Quisqueya or Ayití (Hispaniola), Cuba, Xaymaca (Jamaica) and the Lucayan islands—when Europeans arrived in 1492. Nearly every recorded personal name was written down by Spanish chroniclers, so the record is dominated by caciques: Agüeybaná, Urayoán and Orocobix in Puerto Rico; Caonabo, Guacanagarí, Behechío, Guarionex and Cotubanamá in Hispaniola; Hatuey and Guamá in Cuba. Women ruled too—Anacaona governed Jaragua, Yuisa the lands around Loíza. Names were single words with no surname, built from syllables such as gua-, ca-, ya-, -bo, -ey, -ex and -ana; the language avoids consonant clusters and the sounds l, f and p, so names feel open and vowel-rich.

Fray Ramón Pané's 1498 account preserves the mythic names: Yúcahu the cassava spirit, his mother Atabey, the storm goddess Guabancex, Juracán, Boinayel and Márohu, and Maquetaurie Guayaba, lord of Coaybay, the land of the dead. The Taíno revival in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the diaspora has brought Taína, Yara, Guarionex, Anacaona, Atabey, Hatuey and Siboney back into use as given names, alongside nature words such as Ceiba, Guaraguao, Coquí, Turey and Karaya.

This list mixes attested caciques and deities, Taíno words and place names that work as given names, and original names in the same phonology, for historical fiction or fantasy.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Look up the history before borrowing a famous name: Hatuey, Anacaona and Enriquillo are remembered as resistance leaders, while Guacanagarí allied with Columbus, so each carries a different weight for a character.
  • Pronounce vowels as in Spanish, gua as 'gwa', h and j as a soft English h, and a final -x roughly as 'sh' or 's' (Guarionex is close to gwah-ree-oh-NESH). Written accents mark the stressed syllable.
  • Taíno names were single words. For a modern Puerto Rican or Dominican character, pair one with a Spanish surname (Yuisa Rodríguez, Guarionex Santana); for a pre-contact setting, add the cacicazgo instead: Anacaona of Jaragua.
  • Gender was not marked grammatically, but readers associate -ana and -aona with women because of Anacaona, and -ex, -bo and -ey with men because of Guarionex, Caonabo and Hatuey. Lean into that expectation or deliberately play against it.
  • Words like cacique, behique and cemí are titles and sacred objects rather than personal names; keep them for roles, places, pets or brand names rather than for a historical person.

Frequently asked questions

What are some real Taíno names?

The best-documented names belong to caciques recorded by Spanish chroniclers: Agüeybaná, Urayoán, Orocobix, Mabodamaca and Jumacao in Puerto Rico; Caonabo, Anacaona, Guacanagarí, Behechío, Guarionex, Mayobanex, Cotubanamá and Enriquillo (Guarocuya) in Hispaniola; Hatuey and Guamá in Cuba; and Huareo and Ameyro in Jamaica. Deity names such as Yúcahu, Atabey, Guabancex and Juracán come from Fray Ramón Pané's 1498 account.

Are there Taíno female names?

Yes. Anacaona (cacica of Jaragua), Yuisa (Loíza), Higuanamá (Higüey), Casiguaya (wife of Guamá), Guanina and Higuemota are attested women, and the goddesses Atabey, Guabancex and Itiba Cahubaba are female. Modern revival names used for girls include Taína, Yara, Yarey and Atabey.

Is the Taíno language still spoken?

Not as a first language; it stopped being spoken within a few generations of contact. It survives in hundreds of loanwords (hurricane, hammock, canoe, barbecue, tobacco, maize, savanna, iguana) and in Caribbean place names, and revival groups study the recorded vocabulary. The original names in this list follow the documented sound system rather than claiming to be attested words.

Can I use a Taíno name for a baby or a character?

Many Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban families do, and names like Taína, Yuisa, Guarionex and Anacaona are common on the islands. Choose one whose history you know, treat deity names and famous leaders' names with the respect you would give any heritage name, and for fiction use the pronunciation tips above so the name sounds right aloud.
