Caribbean Name Generator

There is no single Caribbean name, because the region was carved up by five colonial powers and peopled from West Africa, India, China, the Levant and Europe. The English-speaking islands (Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, the Bahamas, the Leewards and Windwards) carry British surnames handed down from planters, with Scottish names like Campbell, McKenzie and Grant unusually common in Jamaica, and distinctive island given names: Delroy, Everton, Fitzroy and Hyacinth in an older generation, Shanique, Kemar, Jevaughn and hyphenated Shelly-Ann or Kerry-Ann in a younger one. Barbados has its own surname stock (Brathwaite, Alleyne, Cumberbatch, Greenidge, Gittens) and the Bahamas another (Rolle, Knowles, Bethel, Pinder, Rahming).

Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname add Indo-Caribbean names (Ramnarine, Persad, Maharaj, Bissessar, Ramkissoon, Sookdeo) from indentured labourers, usually paired with Hindu, Muslim or English first names. Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe use French forms, often hyphenated (Jean-Baptiste, Pierre-Louis, Marie-Ange, Saint-Fleur), while Saint Lucia and Dominica keep the abbreviated Jn or Jno in surnames like Jn Baptiste. Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico follow Spanish naming, with Cuba's invented Y-names (Yosvany, Yailén, Yuniesky) and Dominican favourites like Altagracia, Wander and Starlin. Curaçao and Aruba mix Dutch and Papiamento surnames such as Martina, Croes, Wever and Maduro.

The list moves island by island through all of these, ending with Leeward, Windward and Cayman names.
