Generate Japanese-style kingdom and country names for fantasy worlds: historical provinces and domains like Izumo, Musashi and Satsuma, mythic lands like Takamagahara, and original names such as Tsukishiro, Hoshigahara and the Kingdom of the Silver Maple. Built for novels, RPG campaigns, anime-inspired settings and strategy-game nations.
About japanese kingdom names
Real Japanese country and province names are almost all compounds of short nature words, which is why they are so easy to imitate once you know the pieces. Musashi, Izumo, Satsuma and Echigo are old provincial names; Shinano, Mikawa and Hitachi are built from elements like kawa (river), yama (mountain), shima (island), hara (plain) and saki (cape). Myth adds grander forms: Takamagahara (the high plain of heaven), Ashihara no Nakatsukuni (the central land of reed plains), Oyashima (the great eight islands). A kingdom can also be named by its ruling house, the way the Satsuma and Choshu domains or the Tokugawa Shogunate were.
For fantasy use, combine a nature or color word with a land suffix and keep it to three or four syllables: Tsukishiro (moon castle), Hoshigahara (star plain), Kurogane (black iron), Hinomori (sun forest). Use no kuni or -koku when you want it to read explicitly as a country, or translate the name into English for an epic tone, as in the Kingdom of the Silver Maple or the Realm of Nine Rivers. Mixing a handful of real provinces into an invented map makes the whole setting feel grounded.
This generator blends historical provinces, samurai-era domains, Shinto and folklore place names and original kingdoms so you can build a coherent Japanese-inspired world rather than a single isolated name.
Tips for choosing a name
- Build names from real elements: hi (sun), tsuki (moon), hoshi (star), yama (mountain), kawa (river), shima (island), hara (plain), mori (forest), kaze (wind), yuki (snow). Two elements is the sweet spot.
- Pick a consistent political label for your setting. A world of warring clans wants domains and a shogunate; a mythic age wants no kuni and realms; a unified state wants a kingdom or empire.
- Use rendaku where it sounds natural: kawa becomes -gawa, hara becomes -gahara, shima becomes -jima after another element (Hoshigahara, Okinoshima).
- Give neighboring regions different flavors: coastal provinces with umi, nami, minato or saki; mountain provinces with mine, take, dani or iwa; capitals with kyo or miyako.
- Translate one or two names into English (Kingdom of the Autumn Moon) for the great powers and leave the small provinces in romaji; the contrast mirrors how real histories name famous versus obscure places.
Frequently asked questions
What were Japan's historical kingdoms and provinces called?
Before the modern prefectures, Japan was divided into roughly sixty-eight provinces (kuni) such as Yamato, Musashi, Izumo, Echigo, Satsuma and Hizen, and in the Edo period into feudal domains (han) like Choshu, Kaga, Sendai and Aizu. Earlier still, Chinese chronicles recorded the kingdom of Wa and Queen Himiko's Yamatai, and the Ryukyu Kingdom ruled Okinawa until 1879.
How do I make an original Japanese kingdom name sound authentic?
Use real Japanese morphemes, keep to three or four syllables, and follow Japanese sound rules: no consonant clusters beyond n plus a consonant, and vowels at the end of most syllables. Tsukishiro, Kagerou no Kuni and Kurogane all follow this. Avoid stacking too many elements; real place names rarely have more than two.
Should I use 'Kingdom of', 'Domain' or 'Shogunate' for my setting?
Match the politics. A kingdom (okoku) or empire (teikoku) suits a unified monarchy; domains (han) ruled by daimyo suit a feudal, Sengoku-style world; a shogunate implies a military ruler governing in the name of a figurehead emperor. Mixing them in one world is fine, as long as the hierarchy is clear.
Can I use real province names like Musashi or Izumo in my fantasy world?
Yes. Historical province and domain names are public domain, and they are widely used in games, anime and fiction. If you want your world to feel distinct, keep a few real names for flavor and invent the rest using the same building blocks so the invented names sit naturally alongside them.
