Prehistoric Name Generator

Nobody knows what Ice Age people actually called each other, so prehistoric names are a genre convention rather than a reconstruction. The convention comes from Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear (Ayla, Broud, Creb, Iza), Quest for Fire (Naoh), 10,000 BC (D'Leh, Evolet), The Croods (Grug, Eep, Thunk) and Far Cry Primal's Wenja (Takkar, Sayla, Ull). What they share is brevity and weight: one or two syllables, open vowels, hard consonants like K, G, R and D, and a complete absence of Latin or Greek endings. Brak and Rukka sound older than Brakus because nothing about them suggests writing.

People in small hunting bands were usually known by what they did or what had happened to them, so epithets matter as much as given names. Tova Firekeeper, Dakh Nine-Scars and Oda Twicewidowed tell you a person's role and story in two words; fully descriptive names like Runs-With-Aurochs, Sees-Far and Burnt Thumb work for cultures where the given name itself is an observation. Clans take their names from totem animals, landmarks and the thing they hunt: Mammoth Tusk People, Clan of the Weeping Ice, Horse Hunters of the Long Grass.

This generator mixes all four layers: a short name for daily use, an epithet earned in the story, and a clan to belong to.
